The Graduate Development Community (GDC) is an active community for both undergraduates and recent graduates. Though currently based in London it is open for membership to anyone residing in the UK.
Why was it founded? To bridge the gap between the academic, open source and commercial worlds of the Software Development community. To help take the theory learned at university and learn to apply it to real world software problems.
What goes on in the GDC? We give advice to graduates through running events, and giving links to graduate jobs and career opportunities. We have an active mailing list.
Who can join? Developers, Programmers, Analysts, QA Analysts, Technologists, Project Managers, Business Analysts, Web Designers will all find something within the GDC. The group is intended for undergraduates and recent graduates within the software industry. Many of the events will also be relevant to people entering the industry from alternative directions.
Is there a fee to join? Is there a fee for the events? No: totally free to join, the events are free too. The community is run by people with a passion to improve the industry and we have sponsorship to ensure we do not need to charge for membership or events.
How do I join? Just click the link saying Join Us in the top right hand corner of this page.
Do you have to go to every presentation? Absolutely not. You can sign up and be as active or passive as you like. Each event attracts a different group too and the beauty of it is that it’s a supportive atmosphere where everyone is at the same level.
Where are the events held? To date they have been in Central London but there is nothing to stop an event occurring outside of London.

It is run by a leadership team comprising members of top technical consultancies, investment banks and the director of RecWorks Ltd, to help bridge the gap between the academic, open source and commercial worlds of the software development community.

The key thing I’d recommend is that you come along to at least one of the Meet a Mentor sessions organised by the GDC. The main event means you can hear direct from leading software developers about how they got into their careers and what is happening in their field now. There is also the benefit of having an experienced recruiter is on hand to answer any CV/interview related questions you might have.
