The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane

The Red Badge of Courage is a 1895 war novel by American author Stephen Crane. Taking place during the American Civil War, the story is about a young private of the Union Army, Henry Fleming, who flees from the field of battle. Overcome with shame, he longs for a wound, a "red badge of courage", to counteract his cowardice. When his regiment once again faces the enemy, Henry acts as standard-bearer.

he Red Badge of Courage received generally positive reviews from critics on its initial publication; in particular it was said to be a remarkably modern and original work. Reviewers were impressed by Crane's realistic portrayal of war; the The New York Times wrote that the book "strikes the reader as a statement of facts by a veteran"

More info

The venue, being a hotel bar/lounge area, requires that everyone buy at least one drink each if they are not hotel guests. It doesn't have to be alcoholic, so feel free to get coke/juice/etc. before we start. The group usually heads out for dinner after the meetup so feel free to join in.

We're usually by the "fireplace". If not, look for me.

It seems that something else has come up in my schedule and I likely will not be able to come. Maybe it will change - i am sorry to miss this meeting.

I started on this book many years ago when I first came to the U.S. but did not finish it. I believe I will understand it so much better now that I have lived in America and know a fair amount of American history.
