Mount Burdell Summit - Hike & History

Join us for a hike led by Michael Landram in the Marin County Mount Burdell Open Space Preserve in Novato. Learn about andesite quarries that helped pave the streets of San Francisco and widen U.S. Hwy. 101. See rock walls built by Chinese laborers to mark property boundaries long ago. Learn how the discovery of gold and dentistry shaped the history of this place. Stand atop the 5th tallest peak in Marin County!
Trailhead: End of San Andreas Drive in Novato
Route: First segment is 1 mile and climbs 50 feet as we explore the San Andreas FR, Big Tank FR, and Michako Trail (option at this point to return to trailhead via same route). The second segment is 1 mile and climbs 500 feet as we hike portions of the San Carlos FR, Old Quarry Trail, and Middle Burdell FR (option at this point to return down the mountain). For those that want to continue up, the third segment is 1 mile and climbs 620 feet to the summit via the Cobblestone Fire Road. We’ll do some exploring on top before heading down. The total distance is about 6 miles and should take 3 to 4 hours.
