    A tour into historic Rye , one of the most unspoilt coastal towns in the country . Rye is small , perfectly preserved and bursting with history , from its place as one the " ancient towns " in Norman times , supporting the " cinque ports" , formed to protect the coast and trade with other countries . Rye became notorious for smuggling and the infamous Hawkhurst gang were known to operate here .     It's most famous stretch of beach in the country - every summer thousands of tourists flock to the seaside here to enjoy the pier , zip wire , electric train and badly cooked bbq's . But that's just its recent history - the further back you go the more interesting it becomes . Join me in the Southern Belle Theatre in Hove with a drink at your elbow as we take an entertaining virtual tour through the long history of the beach , from bathing machines to nudist beaches , strolls on the promenade to mods and rockers fighting on the front .
