Sunday Guitar Picnic in Central Park... awww yeah!!!

Hey y'all! This summer, I'm on tour... however, the picnics are just too popular, so we will keep the tradition going!

Group organized picnics

These picnics will be organized by members of the group. What does that mean? Beginning July 14, until the weather is cold (probably October), there will always be guitarists from our group meeting at the Great Hill, every Sunday starting at 2pm in good weather. This means that if you're looking to meet other guitarists to jam with, learn new tips + songs, or just hang out with friends and play frisbee, there will always be members of our group meeting there to play.

Updates

Because I am not there to host...

-read the weather beforehand and use your own best judgement (the meetup will remain on the site even in bad weather)

-be especially kind and welcoming to new members (our group is famous for that!)

-please keep the comments on the meetup page positive and constructive. If there's something that you see could improve the group, contact the organizers directly and volunteer to pitch in!

Our traditions continue:

-the picnics are always FREE

-feed each other (bring enough food/drinks to share for yourself and a few friends) When you RSVP, please include what you plan to bring. Coolers are always welcome.

-the picnics are open to all levels, ages, and even people who don't play guitar, friends, lovers, dogs, and babies (we do regret that poorly-behaved children will walk the plank...)

-printed pages of songs with the lyrics and chords are always popular (if someone wants to volunteer to make an NYCGG songbook like we have in the past, email us!)

Have a great time!!!

Directions:

By subway: B,C to 103rd and Central Park West or the 1 to 103rd and Broadway

Hi Everyone! I'm happy to see this discussion happening. As you meet on Sundays, please remember that the essence of the group is to serve the community. Choose songs with open chords that everyone will know (Hey Jude, Hotel California...) and be inclusive, listen to all opinions, and go out of your way to help those who are just starting on guitar. We pride ourselves on being a guitar group without ego, and without any other motivation than to play music together. I'm happy to see this spirit continue on Sundays.

(This was my first Sunday w the group so please allow for any Rookie-ish observations) Almost missed it due to not seeing anyone in the beginning (until 2:30). Perhaps this can be remedied by having a point person (called a Pick Guard? If they don't mind, that is) who stays @ CPWest / 106th from 1:45 to 3pm, to make sure everyone knows where to go. The Pick Guard can be a dif. person each time. The only req. would be his / her assurance they'd be there that day. Is this a good idea? If so it can be presented to the organizer(s). The event itself was very fun. There was a consistent effort to keep the songs at a level where all could participate, which was very cool. I'd like to see more general input but some are more shy than others...maybe the more outgoing of us can gently nudge the shyer (shier? LOL) attendees through encouragement. I personally plan to bring easy guitar song sheets whenever I attend...that's an area I feel I can help out.

The best jam circles I've been to are ones that are very democratic and inclusive. The general etiquette is that everyone gets a turn to call out and lead a song asbit goes around the circle. Doesn't matter skill level. You can play or pass until your turn comes up again.

The person whose turn it is calls the song sets the key and tempo, and also calls out solo breaks if there are any. Generally a nod in the direction of who they want to solo first, or arranged beforehand. They also dictate the ending. They can choose anything, a jam song, singalong, instrumental solo, original. This way, everyone at least has the chance to contriibute.
