How did you discover the NYC Guitar Group?

Part of me is suspect of something called a Meetup .I may have Googled "Open Mic" and this one came up.It looked very well attended and there were many repeaters which is a good predictor for how comfortable the place and how inviting the people .An open mic is not only about the playing. It's a night out, it's entertainment and light networking.

What bwaySteve B. is saying about this Meetup Group

A successful open mic becomes a mini music scene. There is a dynamic to how it is run that creates a lot of the vibe. "The List" and the way it is administered is a big part of it and everyone seemed to feel comfortable with the way it was handled. Another important aspect of an open mic is the PA and there's an adequate one at the Ella Lounge with real monitors ,decent speakers and most importantly, someone to operate it which removes one tech aspect of getting up to perform.I found the crowd especially well mannered and welcoming and the diversity in terms of styles ,experience, level of talent, ethnicities represented are what you'd expect from a City like this one. I have attended open mics here for years and recommend this as of the best. They even sent a bartender down to the basement which says a lot about the venue and how they view musicians.
