What a lovely day for a hike at Hi Tor! I was bowled over by the enthusiastic turnout (40 people!). A big thank you to Ryan for sweeping and everyone else who helped out when we had issues (overheating, bee stings, climbing). Despite a few bumps, it seemed like everyone had fun. I know I did! See you next time...

For this hike, strenuous means there are two steep, rocky hills of ~0.3 miles each. One is toward the beginning and one is about halfway through. My mantra on these hills is "just keep swimming". Additionally, there is a descent into and ascent out of the Conklin Gully... twice. There are other shorter hills throughout the route. The trails vary from rocky to packed dirt to tall(ish) grass. I would like to keep up as quick a pace as the group can handle. In my experience, most people who attend my hikes want a workout and like the hills and fast pace. (especially Vinny ;) I hope this provides the requested clarification.

I did this hike a few weeks ago. Hilly is an understatement. :-) But there are absolutely beautiful views. I will try to make it...

    • Carina G.

I guess the definition of hilly that depends on your perspective... I think climbing Gannett Hill (Vinny style) is a lot worse than Hi Tor.

So Carina, am signed up to go and enjoy, but I may need some clarification on "strenuous". Please help me out. Thanks!

Sorry everyone, I really wanted to attend but injured myself this week and am not sure if I could make the hike....so I will pass and be on the next one I can. Have a great time.

Update 1 of 2: Wow! This is a big group for an out-of-town hike. I'm excited that so many people want to hike at Hi Tor! Looks like the weather should be good, too. I'd like to start hiking at 10am, so we'll be leaving the park & ride by 9:05am. Please be on time, or preferably 5-10 minutes early so we can figure out carpooling. If you'll be meeting us at the trailhead, please be there by 10am (or a few minutes before). If you would like my annotated map, send me a message and I'll e-mail it to you. The turnoff to the trailhead is easy to miss, so check your mileage when you turn on Parrish Hill Road. It's about 0.6 miles up the hill and the turnoff is to the right where the road curves to the left.

Update 2 of 2: Don't forget to bring plenty of water and a snack and/or lunch. We'll break as needed along the way, but there will be a longer stop at the overlook toward the end of the hike (probably around noon). FYI - There's a rudimentary outhouse at the overlook, but no other bathroom facilities at the trailhead or along the route Note: The gully was dry when we were there on Saturday, but with the rain this week, we may have to hop from stone to stone. I guess we'll find out when we get there! Might not be a bad idea to bring a change of socks...

    September 12, 2013

  • Carina G.

Jason and I scouted today. In awesome news, the gully is dry and the trails are in great shape. The route came in at 5.7 miles and includes two fairly lengthy (several tenths of a mile) and steep hills. However, anyone who attended my last Hi Tor hike will be glad to hear we're not starting from the killer hill at the DEC parking lot on Route 245. If you won't be meeting us in Bushnell's Basin, be at the parking area off Parrish Hill Road [masked],[masked]) no later than 10am (preferably 9:45am). If you'd like an annotated map to the starting location, send me a message with your email address and I'll send you a PDF. This will be super fun! See you there...

    September 7, 2013

    • Vin S.

What? I am not happy to hear about the killer hill being dismissed...maybe i should go to Gannett...lol. jus kidding! I think I'll be there. Can't wait

      September 7, 2013

    • Carina G.

There are other hills! In addition to two that were on the last hike, we have to get into and out of the gully... Twice! You can run if you want.

      September 8, 2013

  • Gary F.

I am gonna try to make this. May be too strenuous for me.

I'm hoping we can cross the Conklin Gully this time around. I will be scouting nearer to the hike date and I'll post an update then, including our starting point at Hi Tor.
