Hi Tor hikes are always fun, but this was the best yet due to the great weather and cameraderie! Thanks Carina/Jason for scouting to take us on a diverse route, and also bringing me to and from the trailhead. Great sweeping, Vinny.

Hello Carina... is there a parking lot at bushnell's basin park and ride?..

    May 3, 2014

    • Carina G.

Yes, the park & ride is a large lot where people can meet to carpool.

I'm planning to drive to the trailhead. Don't wait if I'm not there at 8:30.

Seeing as how we've had rain all week and it appears likely to continue through the weekend, I suspect there will be a ton of water and mud on the trails at Hi Tor. I reiterate my previous comments about wearing sturdy, waterproof footwear. I would also suggest bringing an extra pair of socks (or two), as well as some shoes to change into when we're done. Be prepared to wade through temporary streams and slog through deep mud. Depending on the trail conditions and abilities of the hikers in the group, I'd estimate the route will take 2.5-3 hours. If we add on a side trip down to the gully, add another 30-45 minutes. See you at the park & ride no later than 7:30am or the trailhead no later than 8:30am!

I didn't have time to scout again, but I suspect the trail conditions will be similar to what I described in previous updates. See recommendations on appropriate footwear. This hike will be taxing, so please bring plenty of water and something to eat. Have a good week and see you on Sunday!

my statement. I have never done a hike with Carina, but she is incredible. Be prepared to work your butt off. Wear hiking boots, bring water and don't eat a heavy breakfast! I have hiked this area at my pace. Carina walks faster than I run...

Update 1 of 2: Jason and I scouted on Saturday, which was a gorgeous day for a hike! It was hard to believe that when I led a Hi Tor hike last April, it was 40F and snowing... There will be MUD, and by MUD I mean running water over the trails. We didn't encounter anything more than an inch deep. For this hike, it is ESSENTIAL to have sturdy hiking boots/shoes that are waterproof. Many parts of the trail are rocky and a thin-soled shoe won't cut it. If you don't have waterproof footwear, your feet will be wet and you will likely not enjoy this hike much. Please come with the appropriate gear. I'm not sure if we'll scout again before May 4th, but if we do, I'll update again.

Update 2 of 2: If carpooling, please be at the park & ride no later than 7:30am. We'll be rolling out on time. If you're meeting us at the trailhead [masked], [masked]), I'm hoping to start hiking at 8:30am, so please be there a few minutes before that to sign in and go over the hike rules. We'll be ascending 1100 feet within the first 2 miles. The first part is a steady incline, and the last part is a steep incline. It's really challenging, but AWESOME! Again, please evaluate your hiking abilities before choosing to attend this hike. P.S. We will not be crossing the Conklin Gully on this hike. The nominal route is 6.5-7 miles, but we have the option to add another ~1.5 miles if we want to go down and get a great view of the gully.

This hike will be very strenuous, challenging, and hilly, including a 2-mile ascent at the beginning. This hike is geared toward hikers who want an extreme workout and can keep up a brisk pace. Please know your hiking abilities and whether this hike is suited for you. Bring some snacks/lunch and plenty of water! We'll be starting from Route 245 at Naples Creek [masked], [masked]). There is limited parking, so if you live in Rochester, please consider carpooling with the group. Depending on how many cars we have, some people may have to park on the shoulder. I'll update on trail conditions closer to the hike.
