Had a fun time and enjoyed starting the New Year doing something healthy and being outside. Request for the newbies: During the winter, can you advise about the hiking conditions so we know what equipment is appropriate - poles, snowshoes, crampons.....

Advice for the newbies. Pack everything just incase! It's better to have then to have not !
That includes extra clothing , food and water.

Nancy, we always try to let people know of potentially problem conditions beforehand. Unfortunately in this case in the 20 hours between me scouting the hike and the hike itself there was considerable melting and refreezing on the canal path, totally changing the footing.

Nancy, I have a rule of thumb that has served me well in most situations regardless of weather.
    Easy hike - no poles
    Moderate hike - one pole
    arduous hike - two poles.
Doesn't always work, but works good enough.

Derek said I had to give a "5" or I would be expelled from the group. LOL
