Hike Leadership

Hike Leadership Rules:

The hike leader shall:

  • Have previously scouted the hike, with the landowner's permission if needed.
  • Be at the designated place and time of the hike regardless of the weather conditions.
  • Be responsible for getting a substitute leader if unable to lead.
  • Be in charge of the hike and make all decisions concerning the route, rest stops, duration, etc.
  • Ensure that all participants have read and signed the GVHC Trip Leaders Report, agreeing to personally accept any and all risks of injury.
  • Confirm that the hike as announced shall not be departed from except as may be thought necessary by the hike leader.
  • Be aware of the restrictions:
    . No pets
    . No radios
    . No smoking
  • Ensure that the rules of the GVHC are enforced, and report problems to the GVHC President or Executive Committee.
  • Arrange for or ask for a co-leader or sweep who will be responsible for bringing up the rear and ensuring, with the hike leader, that hikes do not get too spread out and that hikers do not get separated from the main group.
  • Set a pace that can be maintained with a reasonable effort by the group so that all members of the party remain with the leader.
  • Confirm that if anyone leaves the hike party they must notify the hike leader or sweep beforehand and do not leave the hike alone - no fewer than two hikers should go together.
  • Be able to account for all hike members at the end of the hike.
  • Send a report of the hike to the Hike Committee chair within ten days

Genesee Valley Hiking Club Leader Guide

These are some ideas and suggestions that will be helpful for hike leaders.

Meeting Place and Prehike:

• Select a parking area large enough for 20 or more cars.
• Find out if there are restrooms near the parking area or on the hike route.
• Walk the hike before the scheduled hike to make sure nothing is blocking the trail and that you know the route.

Day of the hike:

• Have hikers sign in on form provided.
• Tell hikers if restrooms are close by.
• Select a sweep or last person who will make sure no one leaves the group alone, and make sure the leader is informed if there is a problem at the back end of the line.

Just before starting time:

• Call for everyone to form a circle.
• Welcome everyone
• Introduce yourself
• Ask if there are new people hiking today and introduce them.
• Announce hikes for next weekend.
• Announce where restrooms are or if there aren’t any.
• Announce the time/distance/difficulty of the hike.
• Introduce the sweep
• Remind hikers not to leave the hike without telling the sweep or leader.
• Remind hikers if they need water and snack.
• Announce where coffee or ice cream will be after the hike.
• Count off giving your name and number 1 with hikers continuing the count off.

During the hike:

• During the hike, stop and look back to see if the sweep is coming at the end of the line. The truth is, you can only go as fast as the slowest hiker.

• Have a restroom break as needed by the hikers. For stops on the trail we have a saying, “men go forward and women stay behind” and the women call out as they finish and start hiking.
