For this initial meetup, I think we should all just get together, introduce ourselves, talk about what we'd like to get out of the group (and other meta-stuff like whether the group is focused correctly, etc.), and then maybe just hang out and code a bit or something, or do a bit of impromptu show-and-tell about something we're working on.
One of the things I'd like to discuss is establishing a regular "N'th day" meeting time at a standard location. This proposed date is the second Wednesday -- does that work for people? If it doesn't work for you, please suggest something else, like 'first Tuesday'.
Location-wise, I think Clockworks Cafe, downtown, is probably a good place. I'm open to other suggestions if those work better for more people, but I think Clockworks is relatively centrally located, has coffee, beer, food, and WiFi available, as well as more private spaces for rent if we get to the point of doing more structured presentations with slides and stuff.
We should also discuss a start time -- I'm suggesting 7 pm for this initial meeting mainly because that works well for me, but perhaps shifting earlier or later would work better for people?
Please RSVP either way -- if you can attend or if you can't. I realize that (a) I'm shooting blind into people's schedules and they may have other commitments and (b) this time of year is chock-full of one-off conflicts that don't normally apply. I'd really like to get all the initially subscribed members together for this first meeting, so if for some reason this time/place doesn't work for you, please suggest alternatives that do. Depending on the response, we may very well end up backing off this initial proposal and rescheduling.
I'm super excited to get this group off the ground; as a recent transplant to Salem I've really missed the technical community I had living back in DC, and I'd really like to get a similar community in place here in Salem (and not having to drive up to Portland just to hang out with some geeky friends would be *awesome*).
By the way, if I haven't connected with you on Twitter and/or Facebook yet, I'm 'genehack' on both of those services (and probably on other social media you use as well). Please friend, add, or otherwise pair with me if you want; I will happily reciprocate.
