Kickoff meeting

For this initial meetup, I think we should all just get together, introduce ourselves, talk about what we'd like to get out of the group (and other meta-stuff like whether the group is focused correctly, etc.), and then maybe just hang out and code a bit or something, or do a bit of impromptu show-and-tell about something we're working on.

One of the things I'd like to discuss is establishing a regular "N'th day" meeting time at a standard location. This proposed date is the second Wednesday -- does that work for people? If it doesn't work for you, please suggest something else, like 'first Tuesday'.

Location-wise, I think Clockworks Cafe, downtown, is probably a good place. I'm open to other suggestions if those work better for more people, but I think Clockworks is relatively centrally located, has coffee, beer, food, and WiFi available, as well as more private spaces for rent if we get to the point of doing more structured presentations with slides and stuff.

We should also discuss a start time -- I'm suggesting 7 pm for this initial meeting mainly because that works well for me, but perhaps shifting earlier or later would work better for people?

Please RSVP either way -- if you can attend or if you can't. I realize that (a) I'm shooting blind into people's schedules and they may have other commitments and (b) this time of year is chock-full of one-off conflicts that don't normally apply. I'd really like to get all the initially subscribed members together for this first meeting, so if for some reason this time/place doesn't work for you, please suggest alternatives that do. Depending on the response, we may very well end up backing off this initial proposal and rescheduling.

I'm super excited to get this group off the ground; as a recent transplant to Salem I've really missed the technical community I had living back in DC, and I'd really like to get a similar community in place here in Salem (and not having to drive up to Portland just to hang out with some geeky friends would be *awesome*).

By the way, if I haven't connected with you on Twitter and/or Facebook yet, I'm 'genehack' on both of those services (and probably on other social media you use as well). Please friend, add, or otherwise pair with me if you want; I will happily reciprocate.

chrs,

john.

Great meeting, excited about all the info that was/will be shared! Already searching for the Sandi Metz book Eric mentioned, and will be checking out Code Academy, Floss Weekly, and Javascript for Cats! (Working my way up to Ruby for Rodents.)

Worth noting there are indeed two useful resources with similar names involved. Codecademy as a portmanteau is the interactive courseware site we were talking about at the meeting.

Code Academy will show up with Google searches, although they've since changed their name to The Starter League. It is an intensive, several-week long design & development bootcamp of sorts. Quite intriguing, since it's quite a bit less expensive than a traditional degree program in *much* less time.

Wanted to be there tonight but my entire household is just getting over being sick. I'll be there next month to be sure. Ideas for new locations to meet:

    - Broadway Coffeehouse and Broadway Commons - free conference room space
    - La Margarita Express on Chemeketa - offers free meeting space in the hopes they will make revenue through attendees purchases of food and beverages
    - Peach Tree on S. Commercial - Think this is rented but not sure

Sorry to hear you won't make it; thanks for the meeting place suggestions, much appreciated!

Just as a heads-up: Clockworks has a caroling event that evening, so if you're planning on getting food from there, you may want to plan on arriving 15-20 minutes early to allow for any crowding. We'll be in the big classroom at the back of the first floor. (Please note that outside food and drink isn't allowed...)

As Clockworks will be shutting down later this month, one of our discussion items will be about identifying another place to meet -- please come with suggestions about potential venues.

I let the SJUG mailing list know about the Meetup, and I posted it to my Google+ feed.

Awesome -- we've had a number of people join up this evening, so the word is certainly getting out there.. 8^)

Also, Charles asked if there was any object to forwarding the meeting announcement to other groups -- please spread it around as widely as possible! The more the merrier (and the better chance we have to turn this into something that lasts for a while). Excited that almost everybody is going to be able to make it and really looking forward to meeting you all in a couple weeks!

Ivan, sorry that you can't make it, but given that everybody else is able to attend, I think we'll proceed with the first meeting as scheduled, and aim to find a regular meeting time that doesn't conflict with your schedule.
