Hike Malibu Creek State Park

Malibu Creek State Park is in Calabasas on Las Virgenes Road (I approaching from the Coast Highway - Malibu Canyon Road becomes Las Virgenes). This is an easy hike of about 7 miles round trip.

We will meet next to the restrooms in the main (second) parking lot to begin the hike at 9:00AM. Parking (last report) was $12.00. I recommend carpooling to share the cost. If you plan to park on the corner of Las Virgenes and Mulholland and walk in - please allow at least 20 to 30 minutes to get to the meeting spot.

The hike begins by following Malibu Creek and will turn to the right at a large intersection (the trail to the left goes to the Rock Pool) and begin out only real ascent. When we reach the top, we will take a side trail down to the Century Reservoir dam before continuing west to the former site of the TV series M*A*S*H. We will continue past the M*A*S*H site until we reach the dam for Malibu Lake where we will break for a snack/lunch. On the return trip we will stop by the Rock Pool before returning to the parking lot.

Directions: From Highway 101/Ventura Freeway, take Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas towards the beach. Just after crossing Mulhulland Road, you will see the Malibu Creek State Park entrance on your right. Park in the second parking lot ( as you reach the intersection of Mulholland and Las Virgenes, you will probably see several vehicles parked there - you may opt to join them to avoid parking fees, but it is no short stroll to the second parking lot).

What to bring: Comfortable hiking shoes, sun screen, ample water, a snack or sandwich for a break at the Danielson Monument.

Questions: If you have any questions regarding this hike, you may e-mail me at [masked]. I may have some carpool space from Pasadena/Altadena area or the Universal City Red Line station – contact me if you are interested.

Nice getaway from the city and enjoyed beautiful rocks, trees, ducks, and animals. It was a nice mix of sun and shades and also I've learned a lot of M*A*S*H. We found a few rock climbers (from us, too). It was a nice group of people and thanks Lee for organizing this.

Very nice to meet Shelly, Rick and Cesar also great to hike with Denis, Reiko, Glen and Robert again. It was a great day for a hike. The hike totaled about 7.5 miles. We took a little side trip to the Century Lake dam and then headed to the M*A*S*H site. They have made a few improvements since the last time I was there. We continued on to the base of the Malibu Lake dam where we took a break before returning. On the way back we took another side trip to the Rock Pool where we watch some kids trying to kill themselves. Then back to the cars for some fun on the 101. (ugh!)

We have 7 more hikers from Early Bird - It should be a nice sized group and a great day for a hike. Sunscreen is advised.
