This hike is about 6 miles round trip with a total elevation gain of about 1000 ft. We can meet in La Canada at 8:15AM in the Von's parking lot at 635 Foothill Blvd. La Canada for recommended car pooling. The drive up Highway 2 to Redbox where we will turn right onto the road to Mount Wilson is about 18 miles. If you are not carpooling - we will meet at Eaton Saddle ready to hike at 9:00AM. An Adventure Pass is required to park at Eaton Saddle. Please e-mail me if you are willing to be a carpool driver - not everyone is comfortable driving on mountain roads.
This is a shared hike with Earlybird Hiking. If you are a member of both Meetup groups, please only RSVP to one.
The Hike: The trail begins at Eaton Saddle on Mount Wilson Road. We will follow the Mount Lowe Fire Road for.5 miles then turn left a Markham Saddle onto a single track trail leading to the 5603 ft. peak of Mount Lowe in 1.1 miles. After visiting the peak we will continue around Mount Lowe eventually joining the Mount Lowe Fire Road again to a side trail that will lead us to the Mt. Lowe Campground. After a short break, we will continue about 2/3 of a mile up to Inspiration Point where we will stop for our lunch break. After visiting Inspiration Point we will head back up the fire road to the parking area at Eaton Saddle.
Directions to the meeting area: Drive to 635 Foothill Blvd in La Canada where we will meet for carpooling; otherwise, get to highway 2 in La Canada by 8:15AM for the approximate 18 mile drive up the mountains. Turn right at Red Box.
What to bring: Comfortable hiking shoes (this is a long hike), ample water, Sun screen, some type of nutrition bar (or similar) for energy along the way and something for lunch at Inspiration Point (pit toilets are located at Mt. Lowe campground - no water along this hike).
Hike stats: This is a "low moderate" hike of about 6 miles with about a 1000 foot elevation gain. Please be considerate of your fellow hikers and arrive about 10 minutes early.
