Big Sycamore Canyon to Danielson Ranch

The hike is on and so is Malibu Seafood (if you are interested).

THE HIKE: Big Sycamore Canyon to Danielson Ranch is a "low-moderate" hike of about 10 miles round trip. The reason I do not have this rated as an "easy" hike is, even though there is very little elevation gain, it is a long hike (10 miles round trip). This is an out & back hike, so you could turn around at any point. We will meet in the Big Sycamore Canyon parking lot near the restrooms (there is a day use fee - I believe it is up to $12) at 8:30AM. The hike begins at the southern end of Big Sycamore Canyon near the Ocean and will follow the fire road the entire distance. The road is shared with horses and cyclists but there is a section where we can optionally take parallel Two Foxes single track trail.

This hike is cross-posted on Early Bird Hiking - if you are a members of both groups, please RSVP on only one

DIRECTIONS: Drive north (actually you will be heading west) on PCH (Highway 1) from Malibu past Zuma Beach and Leo Carrillo Beach. Turn right into Big Sycamore Canyon. It is well marked. There is a fee for parking or you can park on PCH and walk in to avoid the fee. Pay attention to the posted parking restrictions and be careful if you are crossing the road. Just past the pay station, turn left and the left again for parking past the restrooms. Please allow adequate time to drive up the coast (it takes longer than you think) and to find parking as the nearby parking fills up early. Mind the speed limit signs on PCH - speed limits are regularly enforced. I encourage carpooling and I may have some space from Pasadena/Altadena (6:45AM) area and/or Universal City Red Line Station (7:15AM). Please contact me if you are interested.

WHAT TO BRING: Comfortable hiking shoes, ample water, sun screen, your favorite insect repellent, something to snack on for an energy boost along the way and something for our lunch break at Danielson Ranch. (I am not planning a stop at Malibu Seafood for this hike, but I can be persuaded)

QUESTIONS: If you have any questions regarding this hike, please send me an e-mail  - [masked].

I really enjoyed today hike. We had a small, but fun and interesting group of hikers. The weather cooperated and gave us the Marine Layer early on in the hike and then clear skies and a nice Ocean breeze for the rest of the hike. The area is slowly recovering from the Springs Fire (May 2013) We chatted with some volunteers near the Danielson Ranch and discovered some history about the area.
