This will be the First Annual Echo Mountain Festival of Lights - a concept of The Friends of Echo. There will be people on the other side of Las Flores Canyon to begin photographing the event at 6:30PM (or sooner). Come join the festivities and be part of history in the making.
Happy Hour Backpacking has been hiking to Echo Mountain every Wednesday night since April 2008 for a mid-week potluck and occasionally on a weekend when there was a full Moon or other special event. We have experienced many interesting and/or unusual things on the trail or at the top where we gather - this event should be the granddaddy of them all!
Mountain Man Mike from The Friends of Echo has invited Happy Hour Backpacking and several other hiking groups to join in the festivities and help light up the Sam Merrill Trail all the way to Echo Mountain with a parade of lights.
The idea is to carry and/or wear as many lights as you can (many of you probably already have some of the battery operated light strings) while on the trail. NO CANDLES, TORCHES OR OTHER SOURCE OF FLAME ! ! ! Start times will be staggered - I am suggesting we begin about 5 to 5:15, but hike at an easy pace so we are near the top at 6:30. It may be difficult to find others in the group with the total number of hikers anticipated, but it doesn't matter - we are all hikers and have a common goal this evening. I will try to arrange something so we might identify each other.
Hikers are encouraged to bring holiday music and warm beverages. You may want to bring a snack, but this will probably not be like our traditional Wednesday night hike.
The Sun will set at 4:46PM with about another 25 minutes of twilight. There will be about 3/4 of the Moon high over head this evening.
Directions: Take the I-210 towards Pasadena, get off on Lake Ave., go North until Lake Ave. ends. On the right side where it ends is the gate to the former Cobb Estate and the road leading to the trailhead. Parking is going to be at a premium tonight - I recommend trying to work out carpools with other hikers. Please mind the parking restriction signs - particularly on Lake. Loma Alta is not restricted until 10PM. There may be parking at Farnsworth Park located a few blocks south of the gate to the Cobb Estate on Lake between Mt. Curve and Concha St.
