Posted in the "Beyond the Metroplex" meetup is a cinema lecture event happening Sunday at the Mark Twain House in Hartford.  Here are some details.  I've been able to negotiate for Meetup members to pay the $10 advance rate even at the door, although you might want to reserve in advance to confirm space.

Here is my message to the "Beyond the Metroplex" meetup:

I have arranged for Meetup members to pay just $10 for this event event at the door on Sunday.  You have to tell people that you are a Meetup "Beyond the Metroplex" member.  Two lectures on film plus reception with the professor, a great deal!  You can sign up in advance or pay at the door.  Details are in the event announcement on our Meetup site.

Prof. Lawrence Baron of the University of San Diego will be in Hartford at the end of October speaking at a number of locations. He is officially hosted by the Univesity of Hartford, and although all his presentations relate to his new book, "The Modern Jewish Experience in World Cinema," we carefully coordinated to be sure he speaks on different topics at each presentation.   I am co-hosting him on Sunday, October 28th at the Mark Twain House. The program will last about 2-1/2 hours including Q&A and intermission, with a booksigning to follow:

Professor Lawrence Baron

Two Lectures for the Price of One!

· The Wandering View: The Jewish Immigrant in World Cinema - The common yet different experiences of Jewish immigrants portrayed on screen from the masses who entered the US at Ellis Island, the early pioneers to Palestine, the refugees fleeing the Holocaust, the displaced persons returning to countries that had persecuted them or fleeing to Israel on the eve of its statehood, to the diverse array of Jews who recently have arrived in Israel and the United States.

· The Reluctant Rescuer from Schindler’s List to Hotel Rwanda - This lecture traces and accounts for the shift from the image of rescuers of victims of genocide and persecution as courageous heroes like Raoul Wallenberg to more morally ambiguous characters like Oskar Schindler and Paul Ruseabagina.     Lawrence Baron has held the Nasatir Chair of Modern Jewish History at San Diego State University since 1988 and directed its Jewish Studies Program until 2006. He has authored and edited four books, most recently The Modern Jewish Experience in World Cinema (Brandeis University Press: 2011) which will be for sale after the presentations, when Prof. Baron will be signing copies of his books.
