  • The Hatchery - New York Dot Comers

Great event. The thing I liked most was the personable feel it had. The investors are very approachable. Even if you're not presenting they stay around and you can have a one on one with them. Yao-Hui Huang really knows how to organize these events and pick great investors who really want to help you. I would recommend anyone starting a company attend a Hatchery meetup!

This is a great event to attend if you are looking to raise your round of funding. You will get great feedback and the presentation skills critics are extremely helpful.

  • The Hatchery - New York Dot Comers

Excellent event - well run, incredible feedback both from the investors and from the presentation coach. These insights are things that anyone in the audience can use to refine their pitch, regardless of the stage they're at with their business or idea.

    Michelle on Sep 23, 2015.

  • The Hatchery - New York Dot Comers

The event directly connects with some of the prominent investors in the NY/NJ Area. The best thing is you really get a chance to present your ideas on a one on one basis and that helps you refine your pitches and ideas at the same time. This is very different than the pitch events where you get one single chance.

"As a Senior Director of Technology for one of the largest media organizations in the world I have to attend too many events. It's rare they are as rewarding, insightful, inspiring or as well produced as Yao-Hui Huang's The Hatchery. This might just be the future of NYC tech."

Last night "Are You Serious?" event proved to be of outmost importance for our new venture: pricing model, competition, market segments - the panel addressed all of these and helped us to clarify our strategies. Many thanks to Yao for bringing in VCs who are on top of their game to critique us last night!

As a presenter I was torched alive... but probably some of the best advice considering how off the rails I went. The VC's were able to pinpoint key issues and offer some words of encouragement. I can't say that for everyone, there are times when I hear "this will never work", but I guess thats just how it goes. I've done 3 pitches at Hatchery - at various stages of startup and they offer real assessment. I'm refining my pitch and look forward to the next one. Thanks Yao for walking me through the event. You guys are great.

  • The Hatchery - New York Dot Comers

This Group is run by a woman named YAO. The simple fact is,.. YAO is SO DAMN SMART, IT'S SCARY!!! She Puts the presenters into an EXTRUSION PRESS... You know,.. like that play-doh toy that spits out various shapes of the clay... and then YAO "REVEALS THE ESSENCE" of half baked or even good ideas... YAO is this meetup..and If you can avoid cringing while she "GRILLS YOU FOR THE GOOD OF HUMANITY".. you stand a far better chance of saving time, having success, and ultimately making money with your idea. In my humble opinion, YAO is nothing less, than a "Genuine National Treasure".. And after you have been fully digested, by her patented meat grinder of internet business truth, you will feel the catharsis of getting to the next phase of your plan... Are You Serious?... is really just what it says.. Do you want to make your company lift off?.. Or just be one of the thousands of sink holes sprouted around hipster ponderings. Don't Fear It, Just Know. YAO is the Answer....

Might permitting just a few more minutes--nothing extreme, even 2 more minutes-- for the initial presentations would be a good idea? Seens like so many have trouble fitting in their full content in the time allowed.

  • The Hatchery - New York Dot Comers

I've been advising entrepreneurs for over 10 years on business plans and investor pitches and two things always hold true; 1. Always have someone review your business plan and deck who are experienced BEFORE you start pitching 2. Practice, practice, practice. . .you only have one chance to make a good impression, especially in the small world of investors. The 'Are You Serious' event is the perfect environment for entrepreneurs to practice their pitch and get valuable feedback, even make some significant connections. But remember, there are serious individuals in the audience, so don't use it as your first opportunity to practice, prepare well in advance, making sure to incorporate feedback from experts. Having a presentation that is professional and well thought out will make a significant difference in terms of how potential investors and business partners perceive you in the audience. And done well, you can walk away with some great connections, we certainly did.

  • The Hatchery - New York Dot Comers

New entrepreneurs should present to experience the scrutiny of experts and their feedback in a safe environment. This process can save them and future presenters a lot of time... they will know how airtight their case has to be... better prepare for questions Consultants and professors should come for ideas about how to provide better support for their clients/students.

If you are an entrepreneur and you want honest feedback on the presentation of your startup concept this is the place to be. I was fortunate to get a preview call with David B. that helped me fix up my presentation, his advice were very helpful. If you are a more technically oriented person (as many startup founders are) you will find the feedback invaluable, so submit for a pitch and let er' rip!
