Camp Peaceful Pines is in the Stanislaus National Forest in the Sonora Pass (one pass north of Yosemite) near the Dardenelles. Across the Clark Fork Road to the south is the Sandy Flat Campground and a good stream for wading and fishing. North of camp is the "Carson Iceberg Wilderness Area" with the 9,328 ft. peak of "Lightning Mountain."
Camp is located at a little over 6,000 feet. There is limited cell phone service (you must drive back up Highway 108 toward Sonora) and no internet service.
There is a main lodge, kitchen, and dining room. They have cabins and beds with bare mattresses. There are restrooms with hot water and showers at both end of camp. There is a volleyball court, ping pong tables, and two large campfire pits. A small stream runs through camp.
You will need your own toiletries, towels, linens, blankets (or sleeping bag) . Bring a good flashlight and warm clothes (it can be cold at night!).
$30 per day includes ALL meals! Breakfasts and dinners are provided and served in the dining hall. Bagged lunches are made in the dining hall each morning immediately after breakfast. The days will be spent hiking or on other activities of you choice. If you bring your own food, you must put it in a designated place in the dining hall. There are bears in the area and no one wants one in a cabin/car. (I've actually seen them in camp.) The camp is powered by a generator which turns off at 10:00 p.m. Participants are asked to help with chores. Chores include washing dishes, washing pots and pans, sweeping the dining hall, setting table, and cleaning the bathrooms.
The cost for this event is $120 for four days ($30 per DAY, not night) Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Please pay $30 to hold your spot (non-refundable). The rest of the reservation fee needs to be paid upon arrival at camp. Jeanine Ewert and Shannon Brinkley will accept cash deposits as well. A receipt via email will be sent to you.
Allow 4.5 hours for driving (everyone who thought it would take 4 hours ended up taking longer than they thought and a few missed dinner the first night.)
Hikers and Company will be the only group using the camp on these dates. We are asked to respect the grounds. The camp is run by the Church of the Brethren, which is a nonprofit organization. The church has a permit from the U.S. Forest Service to run the camp. Please leave pets at home. Alcohol is only allowed in unidentifiable containers.
There are numerous hiking options varying from strenuous to easy. Some hikes will be in the Sonora Pass area, including Sonora Peak and Stanislaus Peak. Hikes along Clark Fork Road include Disaster Creek, Arnot Creek and Sword Lake. It is also possible to ride a bike from camp to the end of the road (3 miles). At Pinecrest Lake (20 miles before Clark Fork Road on Highway 108) is a hike to Cleo's Baths in addition to kayaking and a wonderful public beach for swimming. There is a short 30 minute hike to Sunrise Rock, just east of camp, to watch the sunrise.
The camp also has maps of hikes in this area.
