Flippin' Friday - Steven's Trail - Colfax - 7.5 miles Int/Adv

Let's do something different for Flippin' Friday this week!

I've only hiked this trail once before, but I figured it was about that time of year for the wildflowers, so I think it's due.  In addition to wild flowers, we'll also see waterfalls and panoramas of the North Fork River.

Stevens Trail is about 7.5 miles long located near Colfax, California. The trail is great for hiking and normally takes a half day. It is very scenic, rich in history and is on the National Register of Historic places. Built by Truman Allen Stevens it was used as a toll road for miners that needed to get from the mining town of Iowa Hill to the railroad town of Colfax. The trail was forgotten but then rediscovered in 1969 but a boy scout, Eric Kiel, and recharted as part of his scouting project. Today it is maintained by the Bureau of Land Management.

Parking and Directions
From Sacramento, take Interstate 80 east and exit at North Canyon Way (exit 135) at Colfax. Turn left on North Canyon Way, which parallels the freeway.  Drive 1.5 miles on Canyon Way and just before it reenters the interstate, bear slightly right onto Canyon Court.  In 1/2 mile look for the signed parking area sign on the left side saying Stevens Trail.

What to bring:

Water, hiking poles, sturdy shoes and some snacks and/or lunch.

See you there!

The weather turned out perfect. The brilliant colors of the wild flowers added to it! The company was great and Wes's stories from years gone by about the Auburn recreation area gave us a visual image of our past and rich heritage. To learn more about the area, Wes recommended reading, "History Noir," which sounds like a great read!

Laurie, Wes lent me this book a while back, Nature Noir, and it was great. Very interesting..especially when you've hiked most of the trails mentioned in it. I saw a flyer at the local library promoting the book and having author signings...don't remember when exactly but you can probably look it up on the library web site.

Laurie, you remembered the hard word and forgot the easy one. The title of the book I was recommending is "Nature Noir." I hope I didn't spoil it for you by talking about too many of the events that occurred that ranger's years of service.

Next time I'll have to take Craig on this hike to show you the Foothill Yellow Legged Frogs out there (a species of concern). They change color to blend in with their surroundings. Miss you Carla! And Sherpa and Beatrice too!

Can't wait to see the photos! If the yellow-legged frogs are of concern, Ca Game and Fish might want to remove the bullfrogs...just sayin...

Carla, we always get off at exit 135, which is the Colfax-Grass Valley exit. As you come off the exit, you turn left (east) and follow the road (N. Canyon Way) which parallels the freeway for about 1/2 mile to the parking area.
