I have led roughly 150 hikes with various groups. My leadership style is different from most hike leaders. Read all details and requirements below.

TRAIL MAP REQUIREMENT: For your safety each hiker must have this map while hiking. CLICK PRINT BRING (

HIKING EXPECTATIONS: There are normally a mix of those who have hiked with me b4 and those who have not. Hikers may initially know no one but that changes quickly and we ALWAYS have a great time.

Most hike 6-10 miles; faster hikers may cover 12-14 miles. If there are problems along the trail, we ask all hikers to help each other. Otherwise hike at a pace which works for you; break when you want. We will spend time understanding the trail, the blazes we'll follow, and where to look for arrows the fastest hiker puts along the way. The slowest hiker picks them up on the way back.

HIKING TRAIL: I know I just did this in January but it was such fun that I'm repeating it. See pictures here. (

The options are limitless but I will do 2 hikes from the same parking lot: Big Schloss ( 4 miles, 1,000' elevation gain; Tibbet Knob ( 3 miles and 800' elevation gain. If you'd like to hike more, I'll show you how. Big Schloss peak, named by German immigrants provides a wonderful view of the surrounding valleys. If it's not too windy you'll want to linger at the Big Schloss rock outcropping and soak in the view. Big Schloss is one of the most well know, and most panoramic hikes in the region, with an almost 270° vista from the main overlook. Tibbet Knob is nearly identical in distance to the Big Schloss hike, and is every bit as spectacular. Boasting a wider and more spectacular panorama to the north and west, a wonderful vista just below the high point to the east, and probably the most perfectly placed campsite in the whole Great North Mountain area!

DRIVING INFORMATION: Carpools leave Centreville Park & Ride (map above) promptly. Come early to form carpools. We will take a nature break about 9am. When you RSVP indicate whether you need a ride or can offer rides. If you take public transportation, use ( to assure you arrive on time.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Too often lately many have cancelled late or been no shows forcing me to change my policy to support those want to hike. I absolutely understand that life sometimes gets in the way but please be respectful of both waitlisted hikers and my time and energy planning your successful adventure.

1. Change your yes or waitlisted RSVP to no by Wednesday if your plans change.

2. Watch meet up site if there is possible bad weather for latest update.

3. If you cancel after Wednesday or are a no show, you will not be allowed on my hikes in the future. Exceptions are on a case by case basis.

DONATION: Please take into account $5 FOR CHARITY when deciding about this hike. Donations are given to the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club ( which maintains our hiking trails. PATC is a non-profit, tax exempt public charity as described in section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.

SAFETY: When hiking, I carry my phone, driver’s license, medical insurance card, credit card, cash, headlamp & whistle.

YOUR PICTURE: Smile, click. I require a picture of each hiker for emergencies so don't be surprised when I take your picture

HIKING SHOES OR BOOTS are important.

HIKING POLES are helpful. My favorite are Black Diamond.

MICROSPIKES are perfect for icy trails.

WATER: ALWAYS bring more than you think you need.

FOOD: It's important to have healthy snacks to munch as you hike. Also bring your lunch so you may stop along the way, eat it and perhaps enjoy a spectacular view.

CAMERA: But of course!!

HUMOR: An absolute must.

PETS: Not allowed on this hike
