  • Jul 19, 2008 · 10:00 AM
  • Shenandoah National Park (HQ address only)

UPDATE!!! MEET AT THE TRAILHEAD, in case it was not clear before. The address on highway 211 is NOT the trailhead. Follow the directions below to the trailhead. UPDATE!!! It will be HOT HOT HOT. Bring lots of water. Mark will be bringing a Katadyne Water filter, but this will only be in case of emergency. PLEASE bring lots of water, and dress for HOT weather. Mark will have a couple of TOPO maps if anyone needs one, but just a COUPLE. Did I mention it's going to be HOT???? UPDATE!! John's not available due to family emergency, so Mark is going to lead. His cell number is 240.271.2000. The crew will be leaving the Vienna Metro (North Parking Lot) no later than 8:15 am. If some one is running late please call. If you don't want to carpool, follow the directions below to meet the group at trailhead around 10am. Email me if you have questions. Thank you! Bring lots of water, both in your pack, and some extra to leave in the vehicles. If you carpool with someone, please offer a few bucks to your driver to help with gas. ************************************* Hi all! Due to the overwhelming numbers of RSVP for Sunday's hike, I'm setting up an earlier hike on 19th Saturday. John from our group kindly offered to lead.
Meet at Vienna Metro ( North Parking Lot) at 8:10 AM and car pool out there.
Please be advised that this hike is not for everyone. We had someone couldn't go on and had to be escorted out last time. Know your limit so everyone can enjoy the hike! *********************** Highlights: Numerous water falls and deep emerald green pools Near: Etlan, VA Scenery: Distance: 8.2 miles round trip Elevation Gain: 2500 ft Hike Time: 5 hours Difficulty: Strenuous Trail Condition: OK, but a few difficult spots HikeType: Loop -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary: If you like water this is a great hike. If you want a great view at the top, pick another trail. You can go clockwise or the reverse. The Whiteoak Canyon trail is a much better trail so if you prefer coming down on the best footing trail, go clockwise. That is go up Cedar Run. If you do this just remember to look back a lot while coming down the White Oak Trail because it has most of the waterfalls. Cedar Run has some beautiful emerald green pools. Both trails stay very close to the streams. The connection at the top is partly by fire road and partly by a trail that parallels the scenic highway on top of the range. If you come up Cedar Run the trail will go off to the right just before a parking lot. It will take you to the fire road where you turn right. At the end of the fire road you will be at White Oak Canyon. There is a trail that heads up on the South side but you want to cross over the foot bridge and then head down along the stream on the north side.

Due, to family illness I had to leave town yesterday. Unfortunately I will not be able to lead the hike this coming Saturday 19th of July.

Hopefully, the hike will still go on with one of assistant organizer who have signed for the hike. Also Lin, is working getting update out about who will be leading the
    hike.

Thank you all for sharing interest going out on Saturday, It really should be great time.

Enjoy a few water falls for me
