Meet at Smiths Grocery Store at 5:45 P.M. for 20 minute carpool to Doc Longs picnic area.(Back side of the Sandias directly down and east from Sandia Crest.)·
As usual I will be recording finish times.
Atmosphere: Hike/run on a highway of legends. It’s a well-kept secret how nice that road is in the evening. You’ll be on the east side of the Sandias where the landscape is bright green and water flows. You’ll immediately notice sweet smelling air, and bright aspens and alpine meadows. About half-way up you’ll peer through a canyon showing the Sandia Crest. Typically, there’s very few cars at this time of evening. Distance: ~3.0 mi. one-way, up an estimated 8 to 15% slope on the wide shoulder along Crest Road. You’ll be on pavement the entire way. Hikers will start out first, followed by runners 10 minutes later. Hikers should turn around after 40 minutes. This is an event for moderate to advanced athletic levels looking to socialize and be with their dogs. Elevation Gain: 700 ft., maybe. This is an out and back and I will follow the last person down.
Rating: Moderate to strenuous.
Bring: Water, snacks, and dogs, if you use them. This is a slow, cool climb. Hike/walk down and enjoy other participants company while you ingest some discernible mountain spirituality. The intent is for owners (and their dogs) to get a good workout. It’s in a canyon so it is mostly shaded.
Hikers should be tolerant of loose dogs. Hikers without dogs are always welcome.
If you RSVP and can't make it, please change your RSVP as soon as you know so that others will have an opportunity to advance from the waitlist.
