Ok, Let's try this AGAIN :)
I went here a few weekends ago and it was magnificent. The wildflowers are all in bloom. The butterflies are in abundance also (see left).
San Pedro Parks Wilderness is known for high, moist, rolling mountaintops with numerous meadows and large grassy "parks." Clear streams wander through the forest openings.
Vacas Trail is 5.5 miles one way with an elevation gain of 800 feet. This is a pretty flat trail. We'll hike in about 3 miles. I found a really pretty place to camp and hopefully no one will get there before us. If so, the entire area is beautiful and we can just find another place. This area gets a lot of rain so bring a tarp. I will cancel if the forecast calls for consistent or TORRENTIAL rain all weekend.
We can do a day hike later Saturday further up the trail.
If you are a beginning backpacker, this is a good trail for you.
We'll meet at the Home Depot in Rio Rancho and car pool..
It's about a 2 hour drive to the trail head (up near Cuba). I have driven it in my Camry but higher vehicles would be better in case of rain and the roads get muddy.
