North Truchas Peak-Difficult

  • Lowes Parking Lot

6200 Paseo del Norte NE, Albuquerque, NM (map)

    35.173466 -106.578247

  • I'll be at the north end of the lot, parked between the Mattress Firm and Walgreens in a white 2-door Civic with a sticker encrusted roof.
  • We will hike up the San Leonardo Lakes trail to the lakes, where we begin the off-trail adventure to North Truchas Peak  bagging three other peaks along the way. There are two scrambles to reach the peak. A scramble is a non-technical climb where a rope is not necessary. However, you will have to use hand and footholds to summit the peak. A slip or fall can be serious. The first scramble is fairly easy and can be avoided. The second scramble is exposed and CANNOT be avoided. If you are afraid of heights or falling, this hike is not for you. The route is difficult with lots of very steep ups and downs and close to 6,000 feet of elevation gain.

We will need a high clearance vehicle to access this peak. I don't have one. If nobody who signs up for this hike has a car that can us there I will cancel the hike. If you want to join me, please mention whether or not you have a vehicle that can get us there (I will be more than happy to pitch in and pay for your gas). If we get a ride and you need to carpool, please make sure to bring some cash to help pay for gas too.

By the way, North Truchas Peak is the peak farthest back in the photograph. As you can see, there is quite a bit of travel above treeline to get there. It is a physically demanding hike!

It looks like I will cancel this hike unless someone steps up to the plate by this evening (Wednesday).

As the date approaches, the question remains: who has a high clearance vehicle? Regina, are you planning to drive? Dan, are you going to make it? If we do not get enough people to carpool us, then I will cancel the hike. Please let me know by Thursday, so I can make other plans. The road to the San Leonardo Lakes trailhead is doable in a low clearance car except for the last 2-3 miles. If someone has a truck, we could all drive in our cars and ride in the back of your truck for the final part.

My little city car is definitely not a match to off-roading. So I'll be happy to chip in for gas for whoever can provide transportation :)

Looks like I will need to stay in ABQ on Saturday. I am taking myself off the list.
