Domingo Baca and Tram Canyon- Difficult

The route, from the base of the tram, goes up the Domingo Baca Trail to the area just below the TWA plane crash where we begin the off-trail adventure following a canyon underneath the tram to Sandia Crest (I call this area Tram Canyon; Aaron Greenwood calls it the Sandia Scar) and take the tram down. No dogs. This isn't the hardest route in the Sandias, but it does have its challenges. If you choose to join me, be aware of the following:

Hike Stats: 7-8 miles with close to 4,000 feet of elevation gain. The last 2,000 feet of gain is off-trail, steep, and challenging.

Challenges: bushwhacking (not too bad), scrambling (non-technical climbing without protection using hand and foot holds), and route-finding.

Unfriendly plants: New Mexico Locust, Wild Rose, Wild berries, Chokecherry, Yucca, Prickly Pear, and Cholla.

Dangers: falls, slips, rock-fall, abrasions, and puncture wounds.

Hiking requirements: Fit hikers who are confident, comfortable, and have experience with heights and exposure, steep and loose terrain, and rock scrambling.

Equipment needed: I would not recommend wearing expensive flimsy clothing as it tears easily. Poles, leather gloves, and a good attitude are recommended. A climber's or bicycle helmet is mandatory!

Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour as Daylight Savings Time ends today.

After doing a difficult and physically demanding hike the previous day, I didn’t expect two of the people who joined me on Saturday, to accompany me on an even crazier off-trail adventure to Sandia Crest again today. Steve and Justin are obviously just as crazy about mountains as I am. Actually, Steve wins that award. Thanks guys for tagging along, I appreciated the company.

Steve definitely wins the craziness award. But that was definitely the craziest hike I've ever done. Looking forward to more in the future!
