Festival of the Cranes starts on Tuesday. How about beating the crowds by going down tomorrow for a hike and viewing the cranes at sunset?
We would leave here at 8:30a, check out the Visitors Center, and hike the Chupadera Wilderness Trail (9.5 miles with about 1700 elevation gain, topping out at 6200'). We'd be done in time to watch the cranes come back at sunset which is 5:00p. Somewhere in there we'd eat - I'd like to have a meal at the Owl or Buckhorn in San Antonio - maybe between hiking and sunset.
This is an all-day trip. We will meet in the Kmart parking lot on the northeast corner of Carlisle and Indian School. It looks like a little under two hours to the visitors center. The entrance fee is $5; bring plenty of water and lunch/snacks to get you through the day. We should be back by 7:30p or so. I've never been to the BdA before so this is exploratory for me but I've been to the Owl and Buckhorn!
