Manzano Peak via the Pine Shadow Trail

  • May 3, 2014 · 9:00 AM

The Pine Shadow Trail is roughly 5.9 miles long ending at the Manzano Mountains Crest Trail.  From that point it is a short distance south on the crest trail to the high point of the Manzano's.  Very nice views for a few miles before the trail enters the woods.  Nice views in 3 directions from the peak.  The total hiking distance is about 12 miles round grip.  We should have lunch on the peak.

We will meet at the parking area for the Red Canyon Trail which is pretty easy to find, then carpool/caravan over to the PS Trail head.  The reason that I am not setting up a carpool from Albuquerque is that I will be down there camping at the state park.   It's about 1.25 hours from the Smith's at Tramway and Central.  So if you meet at the Smith's at 7:30 and get your riding arrangements going you will get to the Red Canyon parking area about right on time.

Three of us, Adrienne, Kristen and I, didn't make it to the top. I estimate we were within 1-1/2 miles of the top when we stopped for lunch and turned back. The trail was good, mostly easy gradients and good tread, except for the last 1/2 mile or so before we stopped, where the trail became very rocky and narrow. This trail needs some maintenance in places, especially in the last 2 miles or so before the top. I'm assuming, of course, that the trail beyond is in the same or similar condition as where we decided to stop. The hike itself was very enjoyable - sunny and warm with a light breeze, and wonderful views.

It's the best way to contact others. Also make sure you are not hiding your email so she can respond directly to you. Let me if you have problems. Is there an intersection or address where this particular smith's is? Sorry I'm new to ABQ and it would be helpful to have cross streets or an address. Thanks:)

Hi all. I drove past the meeting area on my way home just now. Keith is right, Smith's is torn up and congested. For all who are unfamiliar with the location - on the west side of Tramway (Smith's being on the east side) is a mostly abandon mall where the Albertson's was. It is called the 4 Hills Village Center. As you enter the mall from Tramway there is a Happy Garden Asian restaurant in the parking lot of the mall. Looks like lots of space to park. Can all the carpoolers agree to meet in that general area? Looking forward to this hike. See you all tomorrow morning.

Hello everyone. I just signed up on Meetup. I'll be driving a white Ford ZX2 and parking at the old Albertson's if anyone needs a ride.

I will be in a light silver Scion TC in the Albertsons parking lot. See all the would-be car poolers there :)

Hi Guys, What time the hike is over? If we have having lunch at the peak how long it take to come down.
    Thank you,

Mona, hiking times are dependent on the slowest hiker. Since I don't know you or your capabilities you could well be that person. It could be someone else. I would estimate about 3 hours to hike down but I make no guarantees. Someone could get hurt. If you have time contraints I suggest you either skip the hike or plan on driving yourself being in control of your own destiny. The hike down is downhill about 6 miles and the trail is fairly decent.

Hi Keith, Understood. I actually will be coming to the Sunday Hike. I got the flu and I think I will be in a better shape for Sunday. I can be a slow hiker. It really depends. Thank you fro your answer. Enjoy your stay at the camping grounds.

Kristen, Mark, Chris ... should we all just meet at the old Albertson's and decide how many cars we need to take?

    May 1, 2014

    • Keith F.

Mark, on the opposite side of Tramway from the Smiths is a shopping center. The vacated store in that center was an Albertson's.

Smith's parking lot is like a war zone. Construction. Suggest lot across the street where Albertsons was.

Am not familiar with that area.....I would need a ride too or can drive if you would like to carpool with me.... But need help with directions. I have a jeep that would hold three to four people. Message me back if you would like to carpool this day.

Kristen: Would also like to carpool along with you and Jackie, and meet at the Smith's at 7:30. Mark

I would really appreciate anyone who will bring me a bag of ice when they come down. Let me know if you will so I don't get a bunch of them. I'm heading down there tomorrow to the state park campground and my ice will be mostly melted by Saturday. It would cost me 4 times the cost of a bag, for gas if I drive out to get some, I think.

    April 29, 2014

    • Jackie

I can bring you a bag of ice Keith

Ditto, Chris' message about a ride from Smith's and gas money.

You can go to google maps and type in Red Canyon Campground to get directions or follow these. Exit off I40 at Tijeras and head south on Rt 337. Follow it until it dead ends. Turn right onto Rt 55. Follow this to the town of Manzano. Drive through town and as you are leaving it to the south, this road will be curving left but another road (rt 131 aka B062) will be forking off and heading straight away from you. There should be a sign there for Manzano State Park and/or Red Canyon Campground. Take this road. Follow it to a sign marking the entrance to the state park and turn right onto Forest Service Road 253. Follow it to the end. The trail parking area is on the right just before entering the Red Canyon Campground.
