Clayton Lake: Looking into the Heart of the Cosmos

  • Jun 27, 2014 · 8:00 AM

PREREQUISITE: You must reserve a campsite to sign up for this hike. Once you have a campsite put yourself on the waiting list and leave a comment. See details below.

above: Lush Nature Area at the end of Clayton Lake

We are going to see the stars!
(Kinda like Samwise Gamgee going to see the elves but different)

Clayton Lake is a certified Dark Sky Park, where the Milky Way is visible on a clear night under the new moon.  The purpose of this hike is look at stars and other objects in the night sky unencumbered by city lights.  In such a place you can see forever.

• Clayton Lake is 273 miles from Albuquerque

• You can share a campsite but act now and find a campmate latter other wise there may be no sites left.

• Individually or in caravans travel to Clayton Lake.  I'll be leaving around 8AM. No matter when you leave try to be at the campsite before dark.

• Friday June 27 is the New Moon so both nights will be very dark and good for star gazing.

• Hiking around the Lake; exploring the nature trails; paddle around the lake in a kayak; go into town looking for photo opps.

• We will have two shared meals, each member will bring something to contribute for the Saturday night and Sunday morning meals.  Once we know who is coming we will offer suggestions so we can have a good hoedown before the star rise.

• The Group means will be an Iron Chef competition.  Details latter on rules and contestant selection.

• Saturday nite we'll have an open mic, if there is enough interest.  So bring some poems (or write one there), play a guitar or something else that makes sound, sing acapella, whatever

• This hike can be classified as a photo experience

You must act now.  Camping sites are limited and may be gone soon.  They are $10.00 a night with an $8.00 with a grand total of $28.00 for the event.  It is up to you to take take of this.  Go here to reserve your space.  Clayton Lake Reservations.

Up to seven people can be at the site.  One car per site.  An extra car is $10.00 a day.  If you share the site with someone else then cut the costs car pooling.  CARPOOLING AND SHARING A SITE IS AN OPTION.

Most excellent weekend at Clayton Lake, an oasis in the NE corner of New Mexico. Coyotes howled in morning and evening, giving the lake a wilderness ambiance. Cottontails were not exactly without fear but were less skittish than expected, probably due to people as a food source. Seeing deer foraging in the early evening Friday was a nice surprise. There were plenty of insects to melt the heart of the most hardened entomologist, never mind jumping fish.

I'd to thank Liz and Wanda for tutoring me on night photography and Nancy for giving me instruction on how Kayak. It made a big difference.

Thanks to Lupe for coming up with a solid idea for another photo weekend.

This was a cross meetup event and I would like to give a shout out to Gregg and his family and Wanda's nephew and his family. They really had nice kids.

We had a good crew for this event. A shout out to all the dogs too.

Hi, I would love to go if I can carpool with someone and split the costs. My car isn't reliable enough to take it that far out of Abq but it sounds like such a peaceful trip!

Both of us are fighting off a bad case of bronchitis, laryngitis, and cough. Unfortunately we will have to cancel out. Our energy levels are low and the recovery process has been long and slow. Have fun and I'll keep my eyes open for another opportunity like this in the future.

I have a campsite reserved. We haven't been to this part of NM - sounds interesting.
