Northern Embudito Ridge > Vertical Forest > South Peak > WhiteWash = Extreme !!!

  • December 3 · 7:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This hike may or may not require micro spikes. I will let everyone know via the discussion board. If it does,
No microspikes = No hiking with us

The Vertical forest is the hardest cardio hike around ABQ. Very hard hike, not for beginners, not for slow hikers, not even for intermediate hikers. Only Chuck Norris type of hikers invited. Pace will be fast because I have stuff to do in the afternoon, too.

9 miles with lots and lots of elevation gain, good 4,000 ft in cumulative elevation gain. Trails can be slippery because of small rocks plus ice.

Get your gps device/app ready and download NorthernEmbuditoRidge file from here

Please, download from Files section WhiteWash_Trail file as well. We are doing a combo of the two routes. You have to have gps app/device. On steepness like these, hikers naturally separate, and there are many ghost trails, so it is easy to get lost. If I think you will get lost or just are not fit for this hike, I might change your rsvp into no. We will wait for slower hikers one minute. If it is cold and windy, we will not wait at all. This hike is Death march.

We will take Northern Embudito Ridge all the way to South Peak. The last 0.5 mile (Vertical Forest) has over 1,000 ft in gain, so that will kick your azz. Hiking poles will be tremendously helpful on the uphill. Northern ridge trail has gravel, so it is slippery. White Wash trail has little rocks and is slippery as well. So, do not wear sneakers, wear hiking shoes, and have hiking poles for balance.

Then, after South Peak, we hike down to White Wash trail which kind of overlaps with Southern Embudito Ridge. There are some really nice views in this area. Before, White Wash trail gets very steep, we will get into White Wash (Piedra Lisa) canyon, and finish at Piedra Lisa Canyon trail head which is here[masked], [masked]'45.3%22N+106%C2%B029'17.8%22W/@35.1125901,-106.4888182,133m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d35.112589!4d-106.488271 ('45.3%22N+106%C2%B029'17.8%22W/@35.1125901,-106.4888182,133m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d35.112589!4d-106.488271)

Hiking through White Wash (Piedra Lisa) canyon involves rock scrambling (nothing too hard). Here are some photos from Piedra Lisa Canyon CLICK for photos here

The weather forecast is here: Weather Forecast

We will have to set a car shuttle for only several miles, so it will be quick.

I can do that - the only way I'd bail is if we end up getting lots of snow (my heavy duty snow stuff like snowshoes are in CO).

Even with shallow shoes but if you have long gaiters, you can hike through deep snow

    Hi All,

Is anyone able to meet me at Piedra Lisa Canyon (White Wash canyon) at 7:20am on Saturday. It is only 1.5 miles south of Embudito Traihead where our hike starts, and it is not Piedra Lisa Trailhead which is way north. The google maps link is posted in the narrative. It should be someone who is very committed to this hike. If noone volunteers, I will walk from Piedra Lisa Canyon Trailhead to Embudito Trailhead. In any case if you see someone with orange backpack walking on the road to Embudito trailhead, it is probably me so please stop and give me a ride. On positive side, the weather for Saturday improved and blue sky is very good for having good photos. If we have Sandia in snow (it will snow little on Friday), the photos will be even more fabulous.

Keith, if you get lost on my hike, I will teach you some karate hard way.

Lol. Don't worry, Bojan. I know the area pretty well, and I'll have my maps!

We have to have micro spikes because of 30% chance for snow. Watch for icy roads in the morning.

Oh boy, it will be cold. I am still up for the challenge but if it affects you rsvp, please update it asap. When it is this cold there is another challenge. At the peak, it may be very windy, so it is important to protect entire head, ears, everything exposed because wind makes it feel 20 degree colder. Gloves, down jacket, multiple warm layers are essential for this hike. I have a potluck in the afternoon, so I have to cook and cannot wait for others plus when it is cold no one is enthusiastic to wait more than 5 seconds for others.
