Plan: I would like to hike up the trail EMBUDITO trail (not Embudo, check the map) for about90 minutes, stop for a break, then turn around and come back down the same way. We should be back at our cars around noon. We will stay on the Main trail, the official trail, not the arroyo.
Trail: This a rocky, sometimes steep trail for the first 1.5 miles so be sure to wear appropriate footwear! It is also open and exposed - so no shade in this section. At the 1.5 mile point the trail enters the forest area and becomes more rolling terrain, shady, but it can be very steep. The 2 mile point is around 1200' elevation gain. This is the Saddle, and past this point there may be ice patches and snow (Oso Pass junction is at 4.1 miles but I doubt we will all make it that far in the allotted time. That is also at 2400' elevation gain.) Let's play that by ear.
GEAR: Hiking poles are very helpful for going up and down the rocky staircases, and I do NOT expect ice/snow until possibly 3 miles up. Bring plenty of water as most of this hike is exposed to the sun. Hat and sunscreen also needed. If you want to try to get to Oso Pass, please bring your microspikes just in case.
Dogs: No dogs allowed this time.
Weather - if it is rainy or windy, this hike might be cancelled. I will post here if there are any changes before Thursday morning 8am.
