Cinco de Mayo on Dragon's Back Under the Perigee Moon

Please note: this is not a beginners hike. We will be hiking on rough and often steep terrain after dark. Also, we would like to hike without lights, this could be an issue for some. We plan to leave the parking lot shorty after 5:30. Be on time.

Physical Level: Intermediate
Tech Level: Intermediate
Distance: 8+ MILES
Return to ABQ: Between 1:00 AM and 2:00 AM. We could be out later.
Sunset: 7:56PM
Moon Rise: 7:51 PM
Full At: 9:35 PM

The Perigee Moon occurs when Luna is closest to the Earth. When the moon rises on the horizon it will appear about 14% larger. This illusion is not well understood but we can supplicate in fear like the ancients or just be amazed, your choice.

  • The moon at its perigee (closest point ) is at a distance of 222,000 miles from Earth
  • The moon at its apogee (farthest point) is at a distance of 252,555 miles from Earth

The basics: The hike will take place in the White Meas area of the Ojito Wilderness.

We will arrive arrive in plenty of time to hike to the far end of Dragon's Back in time for sunset and moon rise. After enjoying the celestial spectacle we will take our time making our way off Dragon's Back, hike through the valley then up some steep bike trails and back to the cars.

Where to Meet: On the west side of the Wallgreens along the Paseo del Norte edge of the parking lot in the Lowes/Target shopping center at the intersection of the I25 and Paseo del Norte at 5:30 PM. Please be on time. We want to organize car pools and leave right away.

It was a wonderful hike under the Perigee Moon. The moon was such that we had no need for lights. It was a great group to hike with. Thanks everyone who came for you company. Next time I do something like this, I would like to add a meditative part, make it longer and go deeper into the valley before returning to the cars. Why, just because.

We should be there at the trail-head between 6:30 and 7:00. If you don't see my Ford Escape Hybrid we are still in transit.

This looks like it will be a blast. Hopefully I'll be able to make the next full moon hike. Enjoy!

Bit of a correction here. The perigee (closest point) and apogee (furthest point) distances can vary month to month. This particular perigee is one of the closest points the moon gets at a bit under 222,000 miles. The perigee/full-moon combination doesn't occur too often, and even less with this close of a distance!

Hey Aaron! The Steep and Deep Meetup is doing this hike that you might be interested in! I will be scheduling it and if you join the meet up then I can add ya! If I wasn't already doing Arches NP I would totally go on your meet up :)
