  • This location is shown only to members

  • Hiking Distance: approx 11 miles total
  • Elevation Gain (approximate): 3000 ft
  • Difficulty: Moderate to difficult. Portions of the South Tahoma Creek trail are primitive to non-existent. Expect a couple minor stream crossings. Expect some boulder walking in South Tahoma Creek. Possibly there'd be a few patches of left-over snow in the higher elevations.
  • Pace: moderate
  • Dogs: No
  • Drive time: approx 2 hrs one-way

What to bring:

Disclaimer:

We will be in the wilderness. Serious injury or death can occur. I am not a professional guide. By attending this hike you are assuming responsibility for your own personal safety and I will not be held responsible for your safety or enjoyment.

We will need volunteers to drive. I can only take one passenger. I have a Park pass.

I leave on time. I do not wait. We depart the park & ride @ 7am. Please arrive 10 min before. Expect to be gone all day and return to the park & ride around 6 or 7pm. If carpoolers want there may be a stop for dinner, beer, pie, ice cream, and/or one of the other essential food groups.

Driving directions:

Drive east from Ashford to the Paradise/Longmire entrance to Mt Rainier. In about a mile turn left (north) onto the Westside Road. Drive 3 miles on good gravel road to gate (3 miles).

Description:

A clockwise loop on the west side of Mt Rainier in the paths of glaciers and lahars. Hike 3 miles up the old Westside Road (gravel) to Round Pass. Turn toward the mountain and head up the South Puyallup trail, intersect the Wonderland Trail and continue to the saddle and the Tahoma Glacier at 5800 ft (about 3.5 miles from Round Pass). Follow the Wonderland Trail  a couple miles into the South Tahoma Creek drainage. Check out the suspension bridge. Leave the Wonderland Trail and head downstream on the "unmaintained" South Tahoma Creek trail (about 2 miles to the road). Then a mile on the road back to the trailhead.

One of the premier hikes in the Park!!! The terrain was breathtaking and so variable. A huge THANK YOU to Mac and Peter for making sure we crossed the "creek"-more like a raging river, safely. Everyone kept a great attitude. I hope the Tahoma trail will again be passable because this loop was amazing.

Hello-I just joined yesterday and have not hiked with this group yet. I would really like to go on the hike this Sunday with you all but I see the spots are full. If I show up at the park-and-ride on Sunday, will I be able follow everyone in my car to the trail and hike with you all?

Hi, I'm still looking for a ride to Martin Way P&R and beyond. Please let me know if you anyone can swing by at Kingsgate P&R in Kirkland, or somewhere in Eastside - Bellevue/kirkland/bothelle. I can also catch bus and be at downtown seattle at 6:20am.

There is a P&R at 104th-MaryJane knows where it's located. What about meeting there? It takes about 1 hr 15min to get to Westside road from there. May I hitch a ride and share gas cost?

Casey MJ, Rachel and I will carpool from the South Hill P&R [masked]th Ave E, Puyallup) leaving at 7:30. That should get us to the trailhead about the same time as the group leaving Olympia.

Anyone coming from the Puyallup, Sumner, Graham area? I live in Puyallup and will be going out Meridian. Don't want to backtrack either. I can drive or be a passenger.
If no one is interested-I will meet the group at the Westside TH.

What time do you expect to be at the trailhead? I'm coming from Tacoma and would rather not drive down to Olympia to drive back up here. I'll be carpooling with Maryjane and possibly Rachel.
