Lightweight 1-Night Backpack

  • Aug 12, 2013 · 7:00 AM

The weather forecast continues to be great for another lightweight overnight. I am gradually lightening my pack in pursuit of comfort, safety and everything under 20 pounds. Last week was a quick walk up to camp at Flapjack Lakes, then Gladys Divide the next morning and out. I was amazed at how a lighter pack changed my experience.

I've made a couple changes and want to see how they work. I'm thinking maybe First Divide, Upper Lena Lake, or somewhere further north. This is a trail runners versus boots hike but with the luxuries like tent, stove and comfortable sleeping pad. I'll be trying out Aquamira, a mini-tripod for my iPhone and a down blanket instead of a sleeping bag. Gear nerds are welcome but not required.

Use the comments section or contact me directly with ideas or questions. I will be finalizing the destination Sunday and welcome more company.

This is not a hike for beginners but it is also for the sheer joy of moving through the beautiful outdoors and falling asleep somewhere wonderful.

Just opened my new down blanket. Pretty nice! http://www.cascadedesigns.com/therm-a-rest/sleeping-bags/alpine-blanket-35/product Tomorrow I'll attach the loops to my x-lite pad and make sure I understand the adjustments and draft tubes.

There are endless choices. This upcoming overnight I am pairing the Alpine blanket with a warmer and wider pad to see if this can extend the temperature range of the blanket by reducing heat loss from below with also taking better advantage of the width of the blanket to increase comfort. This brought the pad weight up from 12 ounces to 20 ounces (4 for the extra width/length and 4 for the increased insulation value). http://www.backpackge...

Well, I'm overwhelmed with the possibilities and choices. Let me know what you think after you've tried everything. You get to be the Guinea Pig.

Hey it is me again-I was wondering if anyone wanted to do this hike to upper Lena Lake in one day? I can't stay overnight because I will be leaving out-of-town on Sunday but would really like to to this hike in one day on Saturday. We could just meet you, Chris,at the trail head since you will be staying overnight. Since I am new to this "meet up", please forgive me if I have not followed the proper rules in asking anyone if they are interested in something other than the "actual" hike posted. Anybody interested in just a day hike to Upper Lena Lake?

Hi Steph. Don't worry about the rules. Upper Lena Lake is very doable as a day hike; a group of us did it last summer. You can also ask Judy (our organizer) about how to host events. My next overnight will unfortunately be next Sunday-Monday returning just in time for me to work at 4:30 Monday.

Fantastic weather. Great (rough and challenging) trail, amazing campsite, and meteor showers too.

Hey Chris. Just got your message as I just got home from being at a wedding all day so hence the late reply. Looks like it's suppose to be just you and me but I don't have transportation and would need a ride from the Seattle area and you are probably down south so I am going to have to cancel. If you go, enjoy and in the meantime, I'm reading and learning what a light pack and down blanket are.

Got it. The overnight trips not on weekends are going to be hard to fill versus day hikes. But I think there's something worthwhile in sleeping under stars. I am trying to get out once a week while the weather holds. I will probably post another one for next week.

Hey guys-just letting you know I tried to do Upper Lena Lake at the end of June and there were so many downed trees, we could not continue to finish the trail to the upper lake. It may be cleared now but just thought I would let you know so in case the situation is still the same. Have fun! Wish I could go. It is beautiful!

Thanks Steph. I always appreciate trip info. I think it is more or less clear now based on the NPS trail conditions updates but I will look at WTA trip reports too. Here's the trail conditions link fyi: http://www.nps.gov/ol...

Hi Syl. I know we'll hike together again. I will keep posting these short trips whenever I can. The pack changes are fun too.
