BAJA CALIFORNIA OVERLAND ADVENTURE: January—March 2014

Departure date from Olympia is flexible but is planned for this weekend, January 11 or 12. (I’m waiting for supplies to arrive.)

Thought I’d post this in case it’s of interest. I've lived for 17 years in the southwest and annually return each year to continue my explorations of this amazing part of the world. I’ve led hundreds of hikes with several clubs, hiked about 15,000 miles (more slowly now), wrote a hiking book…. This year I’m extending my exploration to circumnavigate the Baja Peninsula.

Participation could range from just riding along to your destination in the US or Baja, or flying in to join the trip. Altogether this is about a 6,000 mile, 3-month trip.

DESCRIPTION: Flexible itinerary, slow-paced, relaxed, mostly backcountry roads through the mountains, deserts and beaches of Baja, with lots of time for hiking, beachcombing, kayaking, snorkeling (including live reefs), windsurfing, exploring cave paintings and waterfalls, local village culture, wild flowers, fishing for dinner, photography, writing…. My objective, as much as possible, is to explore the natural world and local culture.

I’ll drive my new, stock, 4-door, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, since some roads require high-clearance, 4x4 , and off-road tires, and plan to mostly car camp (showers are pretty readily available), though in some cases might opt for a hotel. I’m not planning on resort stays, but maybe you can convince me. Temperatures are mostly temperate 70 degrees plus or minus.

LEG 1: Olympia to San Diego with brief stops at REI in Portland, Salem OR, Redding CA, Woodland CA, Palo Alto CA, (possibly a couple of days at the Getty in LA), Del Mar-La Jolla, San Diego.

LEG 2: Tecata Border Crossing east of San Diego, then Mexico Hwy 3 through Baja wine country to Ensenada and then east to San Felipe on the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez). From there the plan is to head south hugging the coast as much as possible to Cabo.

LEG 3: North along the Pacific Ocean as much as possible with whale watching/petting at the winter birthing waters of the grey whales at Bahia Magdalena, etc.

LEG 4: Undecided now, but will include some US National Parks.

If interested email me at [masked] or[masked] before 7 PM.

A meeting of all potential participants will be necessary before departure.
