What to bring:
We will be in the wilderness. Serious injury or death can occur. I am not a professional guide, by attending this hike you are assuming responsibility for your own personal safety and I will not be held responsible for your safety or enjoyment.
I leave on time. I do not wait. We depart the park & ride @ 7am. Please arrive 10 min before. Expect to be gone all day and return to the park & ride around 6 or 7pm. If carpoolers want there may be a stop on the way back for pizza, beer, pie, ice cream and/or more healthy, plant-based fare.
We will need volunteers to drive. I can only take one passenger. I have a federal lands pass.
From Lacey - Martin Way Park and Ride, north on I-5, to 18, then I-90 to exit #45. Go north and turn left on Forest Service Road #9030. Continue on FS Road #9030 for three-quarters of a mile. At the “Y” stay left (straight) onto FS Road #9031 (Mason Lake Road). Continue for 3.2 miles to the trailhead at the end of road.
Hike abandoned road grade, cross Mason Creek at 0.6 miles. Continue east for another mile before leaving the road grade to switchback up through open south-facing slopes to the junction with Bandera Mountain Trail at 2.8 miles.
This will be a steep hike.
At the junction take a right for a steep scramble up Bandera Mountain (5241 ft) or continue 0.2 miles left to the ridgeline, which marks the boundary of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Continue 0.4 miles, losing 300 feet in elevation, to the Mason Creek outlet at milepost 3.4 and follow the west shoreline before gradually climbing to the junction with Mount Defiance Trail 1009 at milepost 4. From the junction, head west and climb 1400 ft up a ridge to Mount Defiance (5584 ft) or east to Rainbow and Island Lakes.
