Hike Big Glassy Mountain & Visit Carl Sandburg Home

Did you know that the Carl Sandburg Home in Flat Rock, NC is a National Historic Site?  The house is just the same as he left it the day he died in 1967, books piled up every which way.  If you've always wanted to visit there AND go on a hike, well, this is the day for you!

We'll do the 5-mile round trip hike to Glassy Mountain and Little Glassy Mountain and then tour the Carl Sandburg Home.  At some point we will eat lunch on the trail or on the grounds.

Tours of the house are $5 per person, cash or check only (let's make it easy on them and bring exact change).  Tours are on the half-hour, last 30 minutes, are limited to 15 folks at a time and it will be a Saturday, so we may be split up for this, but we would rather be flexible than schedule a specific group tour time.  The grounds are extensive and free to roam around, including the barn where Mrs. Sandburg operated the Chikaming Goat Dairy (different goats now of course...)

Please check out the Carl Sandburg Home website

Here is the link to the trail map - please bring a copy with you

No kids, no dogs, please

No dinner on the drive back to Charlotte because your fearless leader needs to be back by 5:00 p.m.  If some of you wish to stop, make sure everyone in your vehicle agrees :)

FYI, Terry Wray discovered a couple of deer ticks on himself from the hike on Saturday, so take a good look at yourself.

    Hi Sharon,
The Glassy Mountain hike and the Carl Sandburg home was a FIVE STAR! Also great weather and great group! Just a wonderful way to spend a Saturday.

Thanks for doing this hike/outing. We appreciate you.

    Sherry :)

Nice short jaunt for a Saturday, a little rain that did not deter us. The Home tour and farm are fascinating, telling the story of this gentle and unassuming family.
