Dayhike Mayflower lakes. (Breckenridge)

Don't pay attention to the map or address given above.

Folks, I was up there today. By next weekend this will be a really beautiful place. I'm going to do a backpacking trip into there next year.

Please carpool. The parking lot is not large.

Address to the Ward Road PnR:

Address: 4655 Ward Rd., Wheat Ridge

Directions to the park-n-ride: From 44th Ave. & Ward Rd., continue north on Ward Rd. approximately .22 miles, left into the park-n-Ride. We will plan on leaving this park-n-ride at 8:45 am.

If you are going West on I-70 take the Ward Rd. exit and go straight through the stop light (do not turn left or right) at the bottom and into the PnR.

Directions to the trailhead: Go West on I-70. Take exit 203 into and through Frisco on Route 9 to Breckenridge. From the last traffic light on South Main Street in Breckenridge (the Boreas Pass Road / Broken Lance Road intersection), drive south on Highway 9 for about 2.3 miles to Spruce Creek Road (County Road #800). Turn right onto Spruce Creek Road and drive 1.2 miles to the well marked Spruce Creek Trailhead. Park here.

We plan to start the hike at 10:00.

The hike: The trail heads west over Spruce Creek (.1 miles) and climbs steadily through a mix of lodgepole, aspen and Engelmann spruce for 1.4 miles to the Wheeler Trail junction (1.5 miles : 10,974'), also known as the Wheeler National Recreation Trail. The landscape opens considerably past the split in a large, marshy meadow with impressive views of Mt Helen (13,164'). Look for deer, elk, moose and grouse in this food-rich habitat. Visitors are encouraged to admire the fragile marsh ecosystem from its edge and avoid treading on sensitive vegetation.

The trail skirts the meadow, re-enters the forest and climbs .6 miles to a clearing at an intersection with Spruce Creek Road and two green utility sheds (2.1 miles : 11,151'). It runs into the dam of a small reservoir about 100 yards past the utility sheds and veers right toward signs for Mayflower and Mohawk Lakes. It resumes in a thinning forest past mining and homestead ruins (2.5 miles : 11,331') to the edge of Mayflower Lakes (2.6 miles : 11,365').

It was another interesting hike. The view of the mountain ranges were spectacular and the path was interesting. I loved the waterfall.

Was at Wooly about 0835 but looks like I've missed Teresa's group. It's 0854 now. I will attempt to drive there on my own. Hope to meet up with the group at trail head.
