South Sandia Peak

Elevation Gain: ~3000'+
Elevation Range: ~6800-9,702'
Hiking Distance: ~12 miles
Hiking Time: ~6-7 hours
R/T Drive Time: 120 minutes, ~60 miles
Pace: Moderate/Strenuous
Hike Rating: Strenuous

Hike Description
This is a hike through beautiful, cool and shaded portions of the east side of the Sandias. We will take the Cienega Trail to the crest line.  Then walk south on the crestline for 3.5 miles to the South Crest. The views from the crestline are spectacular and this will be a perfect time of year.

I'm envisioning a moderate/strenuous pace.

Directions
Santa Fe Outlet Mall is near the end of Cerrillos. We'll park between the Inn at Santa Fe and the mall. Dave's cell is[masked]-7557.

I just want to thank everyone who went on the hike. When unexpected situations arise, we get to really learn about each other on a deeper level. Everyone showed in they own way, that they are excellent people. It was a beautiful place too. FYI, I bought a new headlamp today.

How was it you guys? Phenomenal I bet. How many hours on the trail, and what time did you all get back to SF? Will there be photos to view?

I know it's gonna be an awesome hike, but I had to switch to the Paul hike to have more free time Sunday afternoon. This makes your group a perfect 10 to meet Forest Service guidelines. Have an awesome hike you guys!

if everyone on the waiting list goes as well, you'll have 23 attending. you'll have to break into 3 groups to meet the 10-hiker limit per group. faster hikers should go first so you don't bunch up along the trail. i'm sure the Forest Service is monitoring this meetup site! let's not ruin the wilderness experience for all the other hikers that will undoubtedly be in the Sandias this long holiday weekend!

Also, its probably a good idea to split into groups before we go so were not all waiting at the trail head and can leave Santa Fe at different times but.... who else knows the route?

Dave, i didn't notice this before, but your group size (15) exceeds the Forest Service's limit of hiking groups in the Sandia Mountain Wilderness (10). as Doug Flynn pointed out last year in a comment, "If you lead hikes in the Sandias get familiar with the new guidelines regarding group sizes (10), as you can be fined substantially, up to $10,000, if caught: ignorance is not an excuse. Be aware that members from the Sandia Ranger District do occasionally view and monitor our website." (http://www.meetup.com/hiking-204/messages/boards/thread/20940402). you may have to alter the group size by splitting it into 2 and leaving 15 minutes apart.

a group of us went up to South Peak about a month ago. at that time both the Sulphur Canyon and Cienega Canyon picnic areas were closed. you may want to check with the Forest Service to see if this is still the case. you could still drive a little ways up the road after turning of the Crest road (536) and then taking a quick left towards the Cienega side and park alongside the dirt road. from there we took the Armijo trail, hooked up with the Faulty going south and then went up Bart's trail (Cañoncito is an option too). from there it's a straight shot south to South Peak. have a good time!

Hi Stefan. I just called them today. Apparently the areas are open from May 15 - October 15 so we're good. However I am very, very, very grateful that you were willing to share your information. It's a good feeling to know that we have a community of hikers, that look out for each other. Thanks! - Dave -
