On this walk, we will cover a loop through the river valley and nearby neighbourhoods that takes us to Cafe Blackbird for a coffee and snack break along the way. There are several route options, so we'll try a different one each time we repeat from this starting point. Most of the options are fairly flat, with a single ascent from the river valley to the neighbourhood around Cafe Blackbird [masked] St NW). The walk is approximately 7 kilometers, to the Cafe Blackbird and back to the Valley Zoo parking lot. We stop several times on the walk to allow everyone to catch up. If you are concerned that you might have difficulty keeping up, please approach the walk leader to let him know.
The walk will proceed regardless of weather conditions, so be sure to come equipped appropriately, including a water bottle or thermos for hydration, a snack for energy, and good, sturdy outdoor footwear. The only time sneakers or running shoes may be appropriate is late spring, summer and early autumn; the trails can be muddy at those times of the year. Grippers or spikes must be worn in the winter months due to snow and ice conditions.
Guests and dogs are welcome. If you bring a dog on the walk, it must be leashed, under control and sociable. We walk trails that are shared with other walkers, runners, cyclists, and dogs. Not only are participants responsible for taking precautions for their own safety but are also expected to set good examples. Our walks are in the river valley so a reasonable level of fitness is required considering the terrain and the trails usage by others. We stop at regular intervals so don't worry about be left behind. If you decide to leave the walk, please let us know.
Our meeting location will be in the parking lot for the Valley Zoo, off Buena Vista Road (which you can reach from the traffic circle at 142nd Street & 87th Avenue). We will be in the near (southeast) corner of the lot, closest to the turnoff from Buena Vista Road, farthest from the entrance to the Zoo.
We will meet at 1:15 PM and start our walk at 1:30 PM. Our typical walk takes anywhere from 2 to 2 and a half hours.
