New Meetup: GET TRASHED!

Announcing a new Meetup for Wild Wild West Hardcore Slowpoke River Canyon Hikers!

When: June 13,[masked]:00 AM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

Meetup Description: This is a TRASH PICKUP/PICNIC/HIKE!!!!

This is a great opportunity to help keep our environment GREEN! The forest service is very understaffed right now and they will really appreciate it! They said picking up trash along the river will also help save an endangered fish (I can't remember the name of the fish). We will be along the beautiful San Gabriel River all day!! I did this with the Sierra Club before and it was REALLY FUN!!!! (You never know what you will find picking up trash- we found part of a dead bear!) Picking up trash is a GREAT WORKOUT!

Goal: at least 150 large bags of trash!!!!!! PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO HELP OUT!!!!

Here is a ROUGH itinerary:

9am Meet at rideshare (directions below)
9am-10am Carpool to West Fork trailhead/picnic area, get organized
10am-2pm Pick up trash along West Fork and North Fork of San Gabriel River
2pm-3pm Picnic (and swim?????)
3pm-7pm (For those of us who still have energy left) Hike along West Fork and Bear Creek (San
Gabriel Wilderness) -OR-
drive to East Fork Ranger Station (Bridge to Nowhere area- it's a little more scenic with a
little more water)(about a 15 minute drive) and hike there (Sheep Mountain Wilderness)

We may go out to eat afterward.

The area is along the river and we will be picking up trash next to and IN the river- so bring shoes that can get wet. It's very rocky so tennis shoes or hiking boots are preferable to anything open toed. The area where we will be picking up trash is a popular picnic spot for people who like to be litterbugs so there is usually tons of trash there. There won't be much trash where we hike. There will be some boulder hopping, rock scrambling, and many stream crossings. Not much elevation gain, and the number of miles will depend on how much energy everyone has to hike after picking up trash. We will probably end up hiking about 5 miles round trip (not including the trash pick-up which will be only a mile or so). As usual, we will hike at an EXTREMELY SLOWPOKE pace!

BRING: Shoes/hiking boots that can get wet, warm clothes (just-in-case), at least 2 quarts of water,
lunch and snacks, bathing suit (optional), gloves for picking up trash, Adventure Pass (for parking
if you plan on driving to the trailhead instead of riding with someone).

********IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP COORDINATE THIS EVENT PLEASE LET ME KNOW A.S.A.P.!!!!!! We need help with printing or distributing fliers (ie. at REIs or in your community) to publicize the event, getting prizes donated (maybe from REI?? so we can award the person who picked up the most trash, biggest piece of trash, most unusual piece of trash, etc.) or getting food donated for the picnic.

From the westside: 105 or 10 east, 605 north, 210 east, exit Azusa Av. (from the S.F. valley: 118 east, 210 east, pass the 605, exit Azusa Av). Go left (north) on Azusa Av. toward the mountains.

We used to meet at the RANCH MARKET in Azusa which is now CLOSED. The El Encanto Restaurant is now closed as well, but the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy bought it and allows us to park there. From Azusa Av (Highway 39) and the 210, keep going north toward the mountains. Pass Foothill Bl. and when you are near the mountains you will pass the Forest Service building on your right. Pass a gated housing community on your left. You will make a right just before the entrance to some stables. If I can find out more details I will let you know- this is all the info I have right now.
