Fire Update and Next Hike
Monday, October 12, 2009 12:24 AM
Hi Wild Ones!
You should have just gotten an e-mail notice of the next hike: This Saturday, Bridge to Nowhere!! I'm very happy that that area did not burn!
I spoke with the Forest Service and they said the 2 (Angeles Crest Highway) is still closed. They did not know if Chaney Trail is open or not (to get to Millard Canyon/Dawn Mine) or whether or not that area burned. They also did not know if Devil's Canyon has burned. The Switzer/Oakwild/Bear Canyon area has burned (one of my favorites!). Chantry Flats is open- Santa Anita Canyon/Camp Sturtevant did not burn. They said any volunteer work in the burned areas will not happen until spring. They do not feel that the area is safe now so soon after the fire, and think that the winter rains will make it even more unsafe. They might need help with trail maintenance work before then in the areas that did not burn, because those areas will be more populated due to the closed areas.
If you would like to get on the Angeles National Forest volunteer list to be notified when they do need help, you can go to:
www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles. Click the "volunteer" link on the left to go to the Volunteer Information Form. The directions on how to return the form to the Forest Service is on the top of the form.
I HOPE TO SEE YOU ON SATURDAY?!
