Mount Auckland DOC Walkway - Then Hot Pools.

This hike starts at 1pm led by Frank .

It's about 1 hours drive north of Auckland city ...With an optional visit after hike about 6 in the early evening to go to hot thermal pools that have had a makeover...near Helensville and Parakai on the drive home .

What ?

Hike to the summit of Mount Auckland  -305m (Atuanui)  meeting at 1pm  with a return to Auckland about 9pm which includes travel and visit to Hot Pools and dinner there for those that wish.

Okay I'm keen !! Tell me more !!

Hike Details -Mount Auckland Atuanui Walkway  -

Walking through regenerating native forest, including kauri, with spectacular views later on over the nearby Kaipara Harbour and Hoteo River estuary.

About 1 hour drive north of Queen Street.

Walking Time :   4-5   hours return same way up.

Distance:  About 8km  .

Track Condition - Could be muddy in places . Wide open official paths .

Meeting Time at Carpark -  1pm  ( returning  to cars about 5pm )  View of Car Park 3km up Glorit-Kaipara Hill Road, which is off Kaipara Coast Highway, Highway 16

Notes # Easy Medium- Slower Paced Hike- Stopping lots to take photos. Afternoon start, so bring a torch or head light as walk back downhill could be in the dark.

## On the way home we'll stop at the new improved Hot Pools called Palm Springs near Parakai just after Hellensville for those not familiar .  They have outside pools only , and are hotter and deeper than Miranda, and don't get a lot of families going, as Parakai does nearby. Entry fee is  $14.

### Note no guests on this hike or young children . Please get them to join us first as a member.  Come prepared to chat and learn about the trees we walk past.

For info on pools and location  -

Open to 10 pm.

Entrance to Palm Springs is in on left hand side of main road...just past Parakai Pools.

Hot food and drinks available inside.

View from Mt Auckland/Atuanui looking west over Kaipara Harbour.

( Pix by Bronwyn- from last years group event hike )

The walkway we do follows an airstrip and logging track to begin with, then climbs gently along the ridge to the edge of Atuanui forest, which has fine stands of regenerating rimu and kauri. It continues up a narrow ridge with side tracks to view mature kauri.

A lookout at the summit (305 metres) provides panoramic views where we have a dinner break or snack.

From here we will  retrace our steps walking mostly downhill back to our cars , then head to hot pools getting there about 6-30- 7pm for an hour of relaxing and back to Auckland at about 9pm.

Carpooling - Hopefully you'll want to come to the Hot Pools after the hike. If not, be sure to inform anyone you are taking.

Organise  rides and pick up amongst yourselves when you rsvp. Suggest $10 be given to your driver. Put note on thread below, leaving your mobile number and area where you live or can pick up from.

If you're new to Auckland- Allow 90 mins of driving to get to Carpark, or 1 hour if you're familiar with Highway 16.

Getting there-Follow North Western Motorway and Highway 16 to Helensville.

From here its another 33km on HW16.

Keep driving to Kaukapakapa township.. This is the last place to get some fuel ...and some food...  and about 15 mins from here  is your turn off on the Glorit- Kaiapra Hiils Rd on your right.

The Mt Auckland DOC track entrance and  carpark on your right where we are meeting  is sign-posted 3 km up  Glorit-Kaipara Hills Rd, off Kaipara Coast Highway (SH 16), 70 km north-west of Auckland.

Hi, I live on the North Shore, so can offer a ride if anyone needs one from the Shore. Otherwise, I am happy to carpool with someone else - most people seem to be coming from the city, would anyone be ok getting off then back on the motorway in that instance?

We'll be leaving from downtown Auckland, and have room for two if anyone needs a ride.
