Do you understand that Feet First, is not just walking quickly from A to B, and that our walks in the bush, are mainly slower paced, and for members interested in learning about native trees, plants, birds & taking photos & getting some exercise ?

Have you uploaded a photo of yourself ,clearly showing your face up close ? This is important for carpooling...This also promotes safety and honesty for attending Feet First Hiking events.

Can you please bring a Gold coin or Donation, on the event you attend, to help cover the website costs, and also goes towards the purchase of group hiking equipment which for 2017 includes two PLB's to help keep you safe outdoors ?
Out there doing what I love!
What Mike is saying about this Meetup Group
Great tramps, great guide, great company. What more could you ask for!
Feet First is ideal for people wanting to experience the outdoors in Auckland for the first time, or for any active adult that likes nature , walking on tracks in the Waitakere Ranges , at a slower pace, as well as for those more seasoned hikers or visitors to NZ , wanting to learn about native trees, and seeing birds, and other highlights on tracks that include hidden waterfalls and lakes, and learning other things like the pioneering history from days gone by, that Stephen likes to share while you walk with him , that fast paced hikers and tramping groups often miss as they just want to rush through the tracks and seldom stop to take in the views or take a photograph.
Instead, we walk slower through the bush, and rest going up the hills, and generally take longer to complete the day, rather than hiking quickly from A to B.
Read on for more extended reasons to join us and what you'll discover on here in Auckland and other places we explore by Carpooling to get to the start of the tracks .
So join us , and walk yourself happy with Feet First on a weekend that suits you !
WELCOME TO FEET FIRST - Easy Going Guided Bush Walks here in Auckland .
We started in 2010 and hike, trek, or tramp as we call bush walking here in NZ , most weekends on a Saturday and sometimes a Sunday. Or go out of town long weekends camping and exploring within a few hours drive of Auckland by carpooling to get to our events which you organise yourself prior to a Feet First Event .
Feet First is for adults only , so you must be at least 20 years old to attend our hiking events .
We stop lots, to chat about the trees we see or birds we hear.. And walk at a slower pace than some of the other Meet Up Hiking Groups in Auckland ...so if you're interest is more than just hiking, and finding some great spots for photography, learning about trees, plants, and some local history, from someone that has spent most of his life walking the tracks around Auckland, and knows how to look after you, out in the wilderness, this is the Meet Up group to join. Feet First .
If you sign up for a bush walk or sometime a longer or challenging hike - read carefully, make sure your fitness level matches the description and you do have the appropriate gear. If you are unsure - please get in contact with the organiser of the particular hike. We'd rather you ask lots of questions rather than something happening because you haven't read the full details of the event, or have come out unprepared for the weather conditions!
We welcome all adults from all countries , as well as those from NZ , who love being active in the outdoors and socializing with like-minded people.
If you are stuck in the office all week or visiting Auckland for a few months studying or would love to get out more and explore the countryside with a local then this hiking group is perfect for you.
If you're not familiar with Meet Up.It's been operating in NZ for many years now. Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. It has its roots in the USA and was started by two guys in New York after 9/11 as a way of getting more people off the internet and into community.
Users enter their postal code or their city and the topic they want to meet about, and the website helps them arrange a place and time to meet. Topic listings are also available for users who only enter a location.
As of April 2013, the company claimed to have 13.4 million members in 196 countries and 125,247 groups, although these figures may include inactive members and groups.
Meet up allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest, when they are travelling or living in another country away from their home city , such as politics, books, games, movies, health, pets, careers or hobbies, or in our case hiking and tramping . Here in Auckland , on an hiking event we can have a group of 30 plus members out for a hike and have 10 different nations represented .
So thanks for considering joining our Meet Up Group - Feet First Hiking Adventures -
Please Read on ...Or click and join now ...
There are about 6 other Meet Up Hiking Groups in Auckland - However - What we do is different on Feet First We keep our numbers on our events mostly to under 50 members and our planned events are with an experienced outdoor leader showing you the way.
You can safely explore the bush with our group, and along the way learn about the right gear to buy to enjoy and protect yourself from the cold, heat, wet and wind that NZ outdoors is all about while you're travelling around NZ or just want to learn some tips from the mix of experienced born and bred NZ trampers like me , that are part of Feet First Hiking too .
We are a social group, and stop lots on the hills to encourage moments to pause to rest and take in the views...Or to get your camera out and take a great outdoor picture...We also stop to talk about the things we are walking past, like identifying the names of trees and plants and birds we hear or see , or local history of the places we visit or if you have a question about something.
We also carpool to get to our events, and its up to you to organise this amongst yourself prior to a hike as we share rides to get to the start of the track - which helps keeps our group Feet First smaller and friendly.
We hike as a group on the day you come , and as responsible leaders we make sure members do not get left behind on our hikes by having a tail end Charlie/ co-leader and stopping at track junctions and other places throughout the day to do a head count .
We also run occasional social activities and meetups where you can leave your hiking boots at home and relax over a drink or meal , or soak in the hot pools near to the tracks we hike, like Miranda Hot Pools in South Auckland or Parakai near Helensville or sometimes further south at Te Aroha.
Where do we walk ?
That skyline of blue-green hills to the north and west of Auckland is called the Waitakere Ranges and takes about an hour to drive to from Queen Street. Famous beaches nearby like Piha and Karekare , and others are visited often.
This area of West Auckland is where Feet First does most of its hiking . It is a wonderland of bush, stream and sea, with over 200km of tracks suitable for all levels of experience.
Whether you come to experience the raw power of the west coast beaches, the tranquillity of the inland forests , the swimming holes of the hill streams or enchantment of the wilderness areas we hike in , there will be something that will amaze you, if you're new to Auckland or New Zealand.
We do visit other places around Auckland, and sometimes we do out of town trips to the Coromandels or other places on special occasions.
Most members on Feet First are aged around 25 - 55 years old. Some though are younger, some older !
Why do we do it -
Bush Walking is fun but hiking with friends is one of life's greatest pleasures. We are passionate about showing people the areas we have explored and we'd like to share that passion with you. Whether you're new to hiking or a seasoned hiker we're confident you'll find our smaller grouped hiking trips fun, challenging and above all ...have an amazing social experience where you'll meet new friends.
We carpool to share costs, which is up to you to organise when you rsvp, giving $10 to the driver who arranges to pick you up from your home or location you choose. For this reason it's important for everyone, to have a clear photo of yourself on your profile.
Most bush walks or longer hikes we do are about 4 or 5 hours long, depending on the weather and event, and also the overall fitness of the group, and we sometimes we do longer trips throughout the summer daylight saving hours.
It's free to join Feet First - though we ask you to bring a gold coin donation to cover the cost of this website on the hiking event you attend and also this goes towards the costs of purchasing group hiking equipment .
