“SALOME” - NAZIMOVA 1923 AVANT-GARDE FILM CLASSIC
In 1923, silent film star Nazimova sunk her personal fortune into the making of an avant-garde film based on Oscar Wilde’s “Salome”. In stunning Art Nouveau sets (emulating the work of Aubrey Beardsley), stocked with a cast and crew of gay and lesbian actors, Nazimova -as the shapely, petit nymphet Salome- prodded, perked and posed away in a highly stylized performance. The films stunning uniqueness and aesthetic sensibilities, were way ahead of the audience of that day, who found the film scandalous and incomprehensible causing it’s almost immediate withdrawal. To today’s more sophisticated viewers, it as a unique classic - a haunting visual spectacular spectacle.
