San Diego's first Fig Fiesta!

We are having a gathering on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Encanto Farms Nursery. It will be an opportunity for fig aficionados from near and far to gather and get better acquainted. Anticipated activities include workshops, exchanging ideas, swapping plants, plant sales, maybe a raffle, lunch, and, if the weather cooperates, fig tasting. There are over 1000 varieties in the Figs 4 Fun Collection, and this hopefully be a year for many of the newer ones to fruit for the first time. $50.00 donation to the Figs4Fun Foundation.

Hi Mike, Thank you for the offer, sounds excellent. I have passed your info to Jon Verdick of Encanto Farms. Maybe we can take a run to your farm and take a look? Where are you located?

I am an organic farmer with lots of land that is not yet planted, figs do well here. I may be interested in letting you use some of my land. I also am a farmer so $50 is a lot for me to shell out. you can contact me about the land thing if you wish.

We have applied for non-profit status which should be avail in the next 4 months. We are trying to raise money to plant the 1000+ varieties Jon has collected, creating of a germplasm of figs. We are thinking two 5-acre plots far enough from each other that another firestorm wouldn't destroy all varieties. We are looking at maybe using county land at little to no cost, money going to irrigation, water costs, tractor costs, etc. So we are in the fund raising mode right now. Once the non-porfit comes in I will be writing grants requesting corporate, gov't, and other donations in hopes we can find some sponsors.

The 'donation' is cheaper than the Fig Fest put on the following day in National City by the Valley Fig Growers. They want $55.00 for 3 hrs.

Love figs, but "donation" is a bit steep.
