  • GameNight! at BIG LOUIE'S BAR & GRILL every Tuesday, in Crystal (a NEW location)

    • What we'll do ... It's a NEW location for Tuesday night GameNight! at BIG LOUIE'S BAR and GRILL in Crystal, MN Join us on Tuesday nights for a weekly board game meetup at BIG LOUIE'S BAR and GRILL in Crystal. As a courtesy to our hosts, please buy some food or drinks and tip generously (we take up their tables for an entire night). Here is their menu link: http://biglouiesbarandgrill.com/files/bl/menu.pdf Here is their main website link: http://www.biglouiesbarandgrill.com/ Please bring games if you have them so we'll have plenty to choose from. Official start time is 5:00pm but if people show up early or later that's okay, too. (Mark likes to show up around 3:30pm, for example...) They do close at 2am. We generally play "modern" board games as opposed to old standards like Monopoly or Scrabble. They run from light, breezy games that take 15-30 minutes or more up to "brain burner" ones that go for a couple of hours. But even if you haven't played board games since Candyland, don't be intimidated. Teaching games is something we do every meetup, and half the fun is learning something new. There are so many games out there that nobody has seen them all. We welcome gamers of all races, genders, orientations, religions, backgrounds, experience level and anything else you can think of - let's play some games! Hope to see you there! Your host, Chris Hoppe TTFN! • What to bring Bring yourselves! LOL ... and maybe any friend who you'd also like to play boardgames with. • Important to know P.S. .... • GameNight at the Union 32 Brewpub in Eagan, every THIRD Sunday of the month!

If it's Sunday, it's GameNight again! We're going to have boardgame fun all month long at a "new" place to play... The Union 32 Crafthouse brewpub in Eagan, MN. Here's a link to the main webpage for our new location: www.union32crafthouse.com As usual, we will have lots of chances to play our boardgames, just in a nicer setting than usual. Lots of tables and space, good lighting, no loud noise that we don't make ourselves... plus some sandwiches, pop, beer, wine, cocktails, ...your choice! As always, it's polite to remember to tip your servers for whatever food or beverages you enjoyed! Support our host location by ordering something to help make your GameNight! even more enjoyable... Can you identify the games pictured below? Then you want to hang out with us a few times during this August. You know your boardgames, and you can enjoy playing them with good company every weekend if you would like to. You're invited! FAQs... Why Move GameNight!™ to a new place so often? Because I want to stir up the hum-drum regularity of the same place every week routine that GameNight has gotten into after being a Meetup for over three years, that's why! Sure the games are often new, and always fun, and it's great to see all the regulars who show up often enough that we usually have over twenty to thirty players on any given Sunday night. But getting out of the house should be special, and a new spot to enjoy each month will help do just that. Plus, there's no law that says we can't go back to a favorite place from the past. One more thing ... you are welcome and encouraged to suggest a location that you'd like to see used for this series of Meetups in the future. Saint Paul area has been where we have met usually, and towards the North end of town, but I am open to anywhere that is popular with the group members. So make a comment to let me know what and where YOU want to play boardgames, okay? How our Boardgame Meetup group works is simple: I always bring a bunch of my games that I think are good for our group. Old, new, hard, easy, weird, you name it. Check out the pictures below for some examples ... The folks who show up pick or suggest what they'd like to play. Enough people, and we can play several games at once. Easy-peasy, it's just like a democracy! But more fun ...But what's next and new? We shall see. Bring anything you'd like to play (and maybe teach to the group). We could even go back and replay a game that we liked. Imagine that! See you there, ... and remember: "Play more games!" Your host, Chris Hoppe Welcome to GameNight! TTFN!

  • "Flocks" written and illustrated by L. Nichols, at the Southdale Byerly's/Lunds

Lunds & Byerlys France Avenue Edina

One of my many book clubs is having a Meetup and YOU are invited also! Join us for a discussion of the book: "Flocks", written and illustrated by L. Nichols. I recommended this book after another of my Graphic Novel book clubs (at Half Moon Books) read and discussed it. It was found to be so well liked that I thought it would be a good introduction to the type of "memoir" books that graphic novels do so well. It should hopefully be interesting for our group to discuss. "Diverse voices", indeed! This is a "cross-posting" of a meetup organized by the group: "Diverse Voices Book Club", link: https://www.meetup.com/Diverse-Voices-Book-Club/ I recommend that you go to their group, join them, and RSVP on their Meetup webpage to help show how many will attend the meeting. I have left the meetup open to all who wish to attend, but please update your RSVP if you are not able to attend so that you won't be expected. The location was chosen to be central for most people, with parking, refreshments, and a quiet space available to hold our book club discussion at. Look for their community room area to congregate and talk for our Meetup. I have reserved their community room for us. Just ask directions to where it's located. It should be marked with a sign saying: "Reserved for the Diverse Voices Book Club". ... Or text Chris Hoppe (at[masked]) to get information and directions. No outside food or beverages, please. However, anything that you chose to purchase from the store or cafeteria/deli area is welcome! About the Book and it's author: L. Nichols, a trans man, artist, engineer and father of two, was born in rural Louisiana, assigned female and raised by conservative Christians. Flocks is his memoir of that childhood, and of his family, friends and community, the flocks of Flocks, that shaped and re-shaped him. L.’s irresistibly charming drawings demonstrate what makes Flocks so special: L.’s boundless empathy. FROM THE CRITICS: (Publishers Weekly).... This moving, skillfully wrought coming-of-age graphic memoir shares Nichols's struggle to integrate his queer identity with a devout Southern Baptist upbringing: "No matter how hard I tried, I never heard 'me' when they said 'we.'" Nichols, who is targeted as a lesbian while growing up ("I heard she's a dyke") and now identifies as a transgender man, first presented these stories in a series of pamphlet comics. Throughout the narrative, Nichols depicts himself as a button-eyed rag doll, perpetually set apart from "normal" family and peers, developing same-sex crushes while still attempting to reconcile his religious faith with the virulently anti-LGBTQ messages baked into the culture: "Instead of questioning the church's teachings, I threw myself even further in." Nichols is a talented artist, often utilizing symbology (such as the arrows that point at him whenever he feels his secrets have been exposed) in almost incantatory fashion. Over time, Nichols establishes his own flock of family and community as a fully integrated person. Written and drawn with equal parts raw honesty and a wide-open heart, this lovely full-color book should have crossover appeal for younger readers, middle school and up, opening up the experience of any reader challenged by their gender identity, sexuality, and/or conflicting religious beliefs. The book at goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38392300-flocks?from_search=true I will be looking forward to an interesting discussion with you, and many others from several diverse Meetup groups.... • Multigroup GAMENIGHT! at THIRD STREET POST in Stillwater first Wed. every month

I want to invite you to another of my favorite monthly events ... boardgames at the Third Street Post, downtown Stillwater, with the Stillwater Gamers. (as well as many other Meetup groups) The usual turnout of gamers is enough for several games to all be played at once! I have been going to this every month for a couple years now, they have recently moved to a NEW location, the Third Street Post, in downtown Stillwater MN. This group always has a good mixture of easy and harder boardgame-type games, some are good for icebreakers and to introduce newer players to the sport/hobby/whateveryouwanttocallit... others are new stuff, right off kickstarter, and some are good as filler at the end of an evening. Here's what the Stillwater Meetup group leader has to say... "We would love to see you at the next Stillwater Board Game MeetUp. As always, if there is a game you would like to run please leave a comment below. Additionally, if there is a game you would like to play, leave a comment as well and someone will likely have it and be willing to play it. We typically have between 12-16 people and try to get in a couple rounds of games in a given night." It's all about casual folks that can either teach you a new game, or knock your socks off in a hard-fought boardgame challenge! You get to choose what to play. Want to take a short trip out to the wilds of the Stillwater area? Drop in with us, on every first Wednesday of the month, while we try to mix beer, buddies, and boardgames.... may the best person win! Your organizer/co-host, Chris Hoppe (more details...) Look for the all the folks with boardgame boxes! TEXT (or call)[masked] for more information.
