Kayak for a Cause Fundraiser Race and Bonfire-Cookout

This will be a fun-filled day and night for bragging

rights and to help a great cause!

This event will be a fundraiser event for Make A Wish Foundation, Greater Virginia. 100% of all donations for racer registration will go directly to the charity for the Over the Edge event detailed in the link below. No donation is required to attend the race as a spectator.

When RSVP'ing, you will be asked if you plan to attend the race, the cookout/social, or both. You will also be asked if you are attending the race as a participant/donor, or as a spectator.

Race Info

Time: Meet time will be at 1:30pm

Race Start: 2pm

Race Course: Everyone starts at boat launch, ends at the lock island. 3 mile total course, straight shot down the Dismal Swamp Canal via the Feeder Ditch. The canal is narrow and straight, can't get lost on the course!

How to Win: At the lock island there is a sign-in book for visitors. 1st paddler to reach the island and sign the book will win the race.

Race Rules: Any kayak, canoe, jon boat (without motor), inflatable boat, or stand up board up to 15 ft long including tandems is welcome to race for the prize. Kayaks longer than 15 feet will not be eligible for the winning prize, but are also welcome to register and race for bragging rights, or just come along for the event. All ages welcome, but children under 18 should be supervised by an adult. This is meant to be fun: even if you aren't competitive or care about racing or winning, or have a shorter kayak, come out to support the cause!!

Entry Requirement: An entry donation of at least $20 is required to be eligible for race prizes and winner recognition. Donations must be made using the link below, via secure credit card transaction made directly to Make A Wish. Once you make the donation, I will get an email stating the donation amount and name of the person. Once I receive this email, I will add your name to the race roster. You will still need to RSVP on the HROA event page.

Donation is due by March 12th to guarantee a spot on the race roster. The sooner you RSVP and make the donation required for entry, the easier it will be for me to arrange details of the race and prepare for the cookout. At least 6 racers will be required for the race to be held. My goal is 15 donating racers!!! More would be great!

https://www.overtheedgegva.com/Alan_Thompson/

Important: To race for the prize, a donation of at least $20 donation is required (more is always welcome) to be a racer, however those who wish to attend the event as a spectator, or just paddle along to enjoy the race are welcome to attend as well. NO DONATION IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND THE EVENT, BUT THE ENTRY DONATION FEE IS REQUIRED TO BE A RECOGNIZED RACE PARTICIPANT.

Remember, this is a fundraiser event, so if you choose to show up and paddle with us but don't want to race, a donation is still very much appreciated.

Winning Prize: $50 Cash Prize! AND small, engraved trophy

After the Race: Once everyone reaches the island, we will take time to rest, snack, award the winner, photograph the winner and the entire group, and get ready for the paddle back. Around sunset we will start a group paddle back to the boat launch.

Safety: Life jacket is required to be in the kayak, wearing it highly advised. Water will be cold, dress for the appropriate conditions. If you aren't sure about this, ask me. Bring a small red light or light stick for the paddle back which could run after dark. You must be able to swim to participate as a racer.

Refund/Reschedule Policy: Once you make the $20 donation online, since it is made directly to Make A Wish, there is no refund possible for any reason. If the race is postponed, changed, or canceled, the donation cannot be refunded. Back-up date will be March 30th if weather on March 16th poses a problem.

Note: If you don't have a kayak but wish to race, please contact me. We may be able to find you one, or there are rental options available out in town. I will have 1 extra kayak available. If you have an extra kayak you would let someone borrow for the race event, please advise us in the comments section.

Advertise this event so we can get as many participants we possible! Tell a friend, a local kayak group, spread the word and get your fellow paddlers out here! Just remember, this is meant to be a fun, light-hearted event to help a good cause!

Bonfire Social/Cookout/Cornhole Tournament

This will be a separate event. All HROA members are welcome to attend. Everyone attending the kayak race as a racer or spectator is welcome to attend, as well as anyone who does not wish to attend the kayak event, but would still like to attend the cookout.

Location: My house, located right next to Deep Creek Lock Park, so only a short distance from the race location. Address will be given in an email to all who RSVP.

Activities: Bonfire in the backyard, music, grilling burgers and hot dogs, and a cornhole tournament.

What to Bring: Folding/lawn chair and BYOB. If you are attending the social but not the kayak race, a donation toward the Make a Wish rappel event is very much appreciated but not required.

Cost: $5 per person cash. The $5 will cover food for everyone that I will provide, and pay for awards for the kayak race winner and the cornhole tournament winner. Any money leftover after buying the food and paying for winner prizes will be donated to Make A Wish.

Time: Approximately 8pm. For everyone attending the kayak event, we will go straight over from boat launch to my house. End time doesn't matter, as late as people wanna have fun!

Note: For those who do not wish to drive home after the social, plenty of floor space is available in my house for sleeping bags, and you can always pitch a tent in the backyard. We don't want anyone driving home that is unable to.

    Hi,

I'm new to the group and wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make it tonight so I didn't RSVP (sorry about that!) I can in fact make it and would love to go the cook-out bonfire but it's not allowing me to RSVP now that the event is over. I was hoping you could message me with the address for tonight. Thank you...hope to meet everyone then!

Weather update: There is an expected possible passing thunderstorm this morning, with some light rain. BUT: The hourly forecast and radar shows it is supposed to CLEAR UP by noon, and further rain isn't expected until around 7pm. The race WILL GO ON as scheduled as of now. Don't let the weather now spook you off, it is supposed to clear up here in Chesapeake! Thanks.

      March 15, 2013

    • Alan T.

Nope, and according to Accuweather the rainn isn't supposed to start until about 7pm, and even then it's only supposed to be a little bit. Temp is gonna be great! Around 70 degrees!

Carolyn, a dog is no problem with me if he can ride along on your kayak.

    March 15, 2013

  • Alan T.

I HAVE ONE KAYAK AVAILABLE FOR USE TO THE 1st PERSON WHO ASKS!!! The person who had originally reserved it is unable to attend. Do not ask for the kayak unless you are 100% sure you will attend. Thanks!

    March 15, 2013

    • Alan T.

I only ask if you want to borrow the kayak, please have at least some experience in a kayak. Doesn't have to be much, but I don't want this to be your 1st time in a kayak. Thanks.

One change due to weather forecast: Since the possibility of rain is greater in the evening, I am making a slight change to the bonfire/cookout event afterwards. Instead of a cookout, and grilling hot dogs/hamburgers, the food will be pizza instead. The plan is to get a count of everyone planning to come to my house afterward while at the boat ramp. At the boat ramp, beforethe race, I will collect the $5 from everyone, and will pre-order pizza from Papa Johns. I will order a variety of pizzas (pepperoni, cheese, supreme, etc). I will pick up pizza after the race as well all head over to my house. $5 will get you half of a pizza, soda, and like before, any leftover will go toward the prize money for the race. It is still BYOB. If it isn't raining, bonfire and cornhole will go on as planned. Sorry for the change, but I think this will be better logistics wise.

    March 14, 2013

  • Alan T.

Important: The race will go on as scheduled as of now. Though there is a slight possibility of scattered rain or thunderstorms, it is expected to be minimal and sporadic. I'm sure we can get this race underway and completed. Thunderstorms are not due until later afternoon. If there is no rain or thunder in the sky at noon-1pm, the race WILL BE ON!!!

    Weather forecast copied by Accuweather:

Mostly cloudy and warmer; occasional afternoon rain and drizzle
    Max UV Index: 4 (Moderate)
    Thunderstorms: 24%
    Precipitation: 0.09 in
    Rain: 0.09 in
    Snow: 0 in
    Ice: 0 in
    Hours of Precipitation: 2 hrs
    Hours of Rain: 2 hrs

      March 8, 2013

  • Alan T.

So far the weather forecast looks perfect! High of 57 degrees, sunny, with 0% chance of rain. Let's hope it stays that way.

Reminder: Race Entry Fee donations of $20 are due in the next week. Please go to the link and make the $20 donation as soon as possible.

Also, most everyone that has signed up has indicated that they are planning to attend the bonfire/cookout afterwards. If you decide not to attend, please notify me so I can make appropriate food purchases. Thanks everyone, see you out there!

Hello guys, I am also interested in racing, but do not have a kayak or paddle boat.

    March 4, 2013

    • Alan T.

Hi Chevonne, thanks for your interest in the race. As of now, the 2 extra kayaks that have been offered haven been asked for already. Jerry has offered a canoe for someone's use though, so maybe you could get with him on that. Otherwise, there is always the option of renting a kayak somewhere, though I'm not sure the prices on that. The canoe probably holds 2 people, so if Jerry lets you borrow it maybe you and Theresa could share. Thanks.

Hi Jenn. I can easily fit one in the back of my vehicle and give you a ride. I plan to carry mine on top of my car. There are a couple people looking to borrow a kayak though.

Hey Jay, Thank you so much for the offer. I need to get 2 kayaks to the race though. My friend, Alexis, is going with me. Hopefully I can find someone with a trailer that could bring both kayaks down. I will keep you posted. Thanks!

At the suggestion of some other participants, I have changed the prize that will be awarded. The winner will receive a $50 cash prize, and a smaller, acryllic trophy that will be engraved instead of the plaque and T-shirt. The general sentiment among some paricipants who gave input was that a cash prize will benefit the winner more than an expensive plaque. Also, FYI, the organizer of Hampton Roads Kayaking meetup, Chuck, was kind enough to post this event on his Meetup as well, so we have some participants from that Meetup that will be joining the race as well. Looking forward to it! We have 9 donating racers so far, and several others joining in the race for fun!

For the Race Entry donation of $20, use this link: https://www.overtheedg... The $5 cash will be collected at the cookout for those attending the bonfire/social event afterwards. Thanks!

Great to see so much interest! Hopefully we get many more participants within the next few weeks. For those that have already RSVP'd: Who also plans on attending the Bonfire/Cookout social after? Jerry and Jennifer, thank you for offering the extra kayak/canoe, for those that need one, these are still available so take note!
