15th Annual Pedal the Parkway

Free to the public! No cars on eight miles of the Colonial Parkway! Join over 1000 other cyclists of all ages and abilities as they bike the Colonial Parkway which will be closed to motorized vehicles from the Newport Avenue exit in Williamsburg to the Jamestown Visitor's Center from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM, rain or shine. The 8.2 mile (one way, or 16.4 mile round trip) ride is between Williamsburg and Jamestown, the site of the first permanent English Colony in North America.

This is a self-paced ride so you can turn back anytime you like, or dash ahead if you're a speed demon. Wear a helmet if you have one...or prepare to be booed and jeered by other riders. The sponsors really want to set a good example for the young'uns. Helmets are mandatory for minors. Free helmets will be available for children who participate in the Bicycle Skills Rodeo at one of the pull-offs on the Colonial Parkway. Helmets will be fitted by members of the Active Williamsburg Alliance and the Williamsburg Area Bicyclists.

8:00 AM – 1:00 PM

You may choose to avoid most of the hills by starting at the Jamestown end of the Parkway. A rest stop with free refreshments will be located at the College Creek pull-off. FREE helmets and a rodeo will available for children.

Parking available at Jamestown and Williamsburg.

You might also choose to add another 5-7 miles by biking scenic Jamestown Island – a ticketed area. Tickets may be purchased at the Visitor Center: $10 per person for 7 days, $40 per person annual pass, or $10 for life for those over 62 (includes 3 guests). Children 15 & under are free.

Lunch is available at the Dale House Café on Jamestown Island from 9:00

AM and 5:00 PM with hot food and service line available between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Be sure your bikes are serviced and in good repair! There are plenty of helpful people along the course, but it's not a lot of fun to push a bike 8 miles; I'm just saying...

Two starting locations this year! Start at the Newport Avenue entrance to the Parkway in Williamsburg or at the parking lot at the Jamestown Visitor's Center.

A rest stop with free refreshments will be located at the College Creek pull-off near Jamestown. There has been free Rita's Italian Ice on a first-come basis in the past at the College Creek turnoff...until it runs out! Maybe this year too? You should still bring water and perhaps an energy bar or piece of fruit for your own personal stash.

Call Allen or Mary Turnbull at[masked] for additional information.

I think the lousy weather on Fri. night kept some people away. That was a mistake, it turned out to be a beautiful day cool temps in the morning and turning pretty warm as the day passed. We traveled about 43 miles from 8:30 am to almost 1pm. Overall, I don't think there was as many riders as last year but still a good turnout. We saw eagles, herons, osprey, and a ton of snapping turtles. Several were as big as 14 inches across and even though I've been accused of STRETCHING the truth I saw one that was almost 2 ft. across the shell! True story. Anyway, we had a pretty good group and several new members that I hope to see again on other hikes and rides.

Great morning - bright, 75F, cooling breeze - perfect for biking and photography! Rick was a super host and made everyone welcome, rounding out the stragglers like me - always taking pics! Young and old came out to walk, run or bike! Fabulous views of Nature - Virginia is beautiful...

What a great day weather turned out to be very nice not too hot. WE had about 25 people show up before I left at 8:35am. I think the forecast might have kept some people at home. Too bad, it was a very nice day. We saw bald eagles, a ton of snapping turtles, and osprey. Lunch was a big hit after 40 some miles of riding. Just a great day to be making miles. I'll see everyone next year.

    Rick,
I am in for the long ride. However, I am new to the group, not very familiar with that area and coming from VA BCH. Please provide me some more directions as to where to meet and the best place to park. I took a look at the area on Google Maps and just want to make sure I can find everyone. Thanks.

Rick - I might be down for that. I love the parkway minus all of the traffic that starts during the afternoon. I am going to try and arrive on time for this event, but I am not exactly an early riser and it is a bit of a commute from Norfolk. In either case I'll be there no later than 8:30 at the Jamestown Visitor Center.

The ride is just a couple of days away, anyone interested in the longer ride? We won't be going at a killer pace, 10/13 mph and you can turn around at any point along the route. The Cap Trail is always fun and the Jamestown Loop is very scenic. Come on guys lets see some turnout.

There is no fee if your just riding around the Jamestown Tour Road. The fee is for entering the Visitor Center and historical area.

If I have an idea of how many want to ride with me I can make a reservation. Or we could go to Marritzio's on Rt.60. Good food there also.

For those that choose to ride some extra distance we'll stop for lunch at the Carrot Tree near Jamestown after completing the Cap Trail. Really good food!

Last year a few of us included the Capital Trail and Jamestown Island loop before returning to Colonial Williamsburg. I'd be glad to have some extra riders. The distance was about 40-42 miles your welcome to ride and turn around at any point. Good training ride for some upcoming Rails To Trails rides.
