What we're about

Lancaster Water in the Wave Sangha is a group of lay Mindfulness practitioners lead by a lay-facilitator, we do not have an ordained Dharma Teacher. We come together weekly to practice Mindfulness together in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, who encourages practitioners to bring Mindfulness into all areas of their day/life, not just while sitting on a cushion. We support each other's individual Mindfulness practice by coming together to practice once a week, share Dharma, & share in Sangha.

We were established in September 2014 as the Lancaster off-shoot of a Sangha in York called, "Water in the Wave", and are also connected with "Cap City Water in the Wave" in Harrisburg, which is another branch off from the York group. We all practice in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh & Plum Village, and, more locally, follow Dharma Teachers, Anh-Houng & Thu Nguyen, at the Mindfulness Practice Center of Fairfax (MPCF) in Oakton, VA. We encourage members to take part in local Days of Mindfulness, Days of Mindfulness at MPCF, and Mindfulness Retreats held through MPCF & Blue Cliff Monastery, as well as, other Mindfulness events.

During our weekly Sangha, we practice Mindfulness across sitting, walking, eating, listening, & speaking. We start, first, with 30 minutes of sitting meditation, moving directly into 15 minutes of walking meditation. From there, we share a small vegetarian, whole food snack during which time we take a few minutes to practice Mindful eating, and then have an open time to socialize & get to know each other a little bit. For the second half of the Sangha meeting, we have a short Dharma talk/sharing by one of our members, and then Sangha sharing in which members have an opportunity to share reflections on their Mindfulness practice, their experience during Sangha that evening, the Dharma that was shared, or any other topic that they feel that they need to lay on the lap of the Sanhga. When speaking, members have the opportunity to practice speaking Mindfully, so as to not cause suffering or discord among the other members. When listening, members have the opportunity to practice Deep, Mindful Listening, by being fully present for another person/the speaker, rather than reacting or internally composing a response to what the speaker has said.

Mindfulness Meditation, Dharma, & Sangha

Location visible to members

Please join us as we strengthen our Mindfulness practice together. We meet every Wednesday, and start with 20-30 minutes of guided meditation, followed by walking meditation, a short mindful eating practice, Dharma teaching, and sharing in Sangha, a community of like-minded practitioners. We practice in the tradition Thich Nhat Hahn & Plum Village, and we study Dharma through member-shared teachings. We are a local community of lay-practitioners, without an ordained dharma teacher among us. However, many of us also practice with ordained dharma teachers, Ahn-Huong & Thu Nguyen, of the Mindfulness Practice Center of Fairfax. We are a very laid-back group of practitioners, who strive to create a welcoming, judgement free space where members can come find peace through deepening their Mindfulness practice in a community. During guided meditation, you are welcome to bring & sit on a cushion on the floor, sit on a chair, or lie down on the carpet, as you feel most comfortable. We share a vegetarian, usually whole food, snack during our Mindful eating practice, but do not expect folks to bring something their first visit. Our Dharma Teachings are pulled from contemporary, Western-oriented sources, as well as, more traditional Buddhists sources. As one of our members recently reminded us: "Thich Nhat Hanh explains that Sangha is more than a community, it's a deep spiritual practice. A Sangha is a community of friends practicing the Dharma together in order to bring about and to maintain awareness. The essence of a Sangha is awareness, understanding, acceptance, harmony, and love. When you do not see these in a community, it is not a true Sangha, and you should have the courage to say so. But when you find these elements are present in a community, you know that you have the happiness and fortune of being in a real Sangha." We hope you will join us.
