Performance Anxiety: Sexuality and Identity Crisis across the Curriculum

Jennifer Tuder explores the role of sexuality in identity through her experiences with sexual 'outsiders.' Combining memoir, theory, and performance, this presentation confronts personal and cultural fears about sexuality and identity. (This is a reprise of her solo performance at the 2007 Minnesota Fringe Festival.) Tuder is an Assistant Professor of Performance Studies at St. Cloud University. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre from the University of Northern Iowa and earned her Master of Arts degree from Arizona State University with her thesis, Sadomasochism and Identity: The Terrible Pleasures of the Flesh in Hellraiser. She also holds a Ph.D in Speech Communication with an emphasis in Performance Studies from Southern Illinois University. Her dissertation was entitled Living Through: Performances with Death, Writing, and Popular Culture.

This was an excellent presentation. We had about 28 people show up so it was a pretty good turnout.
Ms Tuder discussed the 'heterosexual imperative' that our society demands and how this impacts how children are brought up and how those who do not have this imperative (for whatever reason) are isolated and felt to feel less than human. We had a great discussion during and after the talk.

Driving to the cities at this point in time is a bit much for my budget but I would like to attend some meetings this summer..

This is a must-see performance. A class act, great dialogue and a thoughtful balance of ideas on sexual identity. My wife and I enjoyed the show. Older kids can find this solo show interesting.
